Walking on Lego for charity

If you thought the ice bucket social media fundraiser was tough, how about performing a fire-walk over a trail of Lego bricks in your bare feet? That’s the challenge being posed by charity Special Kids in the UK for the MMMM appeal. The multitude of Ms stands for Marvellous Memory Making Machines and is the code name for caravans and motorhomes that the charity will purchase and adapt so that children with special needs and their families can have a much-needed holiday. The vehicles and statics will be adapted with lifting hoists, wheelchair access, special posture beds and seating, fully-fitted wet room, changing table, sensory lightings and a quiet room. Parents often have to give up work to care for children with special needs and as a result can rarely afford or find a suitable holiday.

The challenge is the brainchild of Dean Sanderson from Leeds whose two-year old daughter Lucy-Mai passed away in her sleep in 2008. She suffered from cerebral palsy and epilepsy. The idea is to reflect how difficult the act of walking can be for some of the children that the charity supports. To take part, fire-walkers are asked to video themselves walking down a trail of Lego and upload the video to Facebook and other social media outlets. Text MMMM14 to 70070 to donate £5, £10 or £20 towards the MMMM appeal then challenge two additional friends to take part in the Lego fire-walk and donate themselves. The aim is to raise £500,000. At the moment discussions are on going with Coachbuilt GB for a specially adapted, four berth motorhome from Swift or Auto-Trail based on a Fiat Ducato chassis. You can see the type of motorhome the appeal is aiming for at the Coachbuilt website.

Special Kids in the UK started as an online support group in 2000 before achieving charitable status in 2005. It supports children, and their families, with a broad spectrum of special needs covering learning, physical and behavioural difficulties. See more at specialkidsintheuk.org.
