Protect your motorhome from the elements and vandals this winter

Motorhome insurance specialist, Shield Total Insurance, has published advice on keeping your motorhome protected from both the elements and vandals this winter.

Shield is urging motorhomers to take practical steps now to protect their investments before the extremely cold winter weather hits the UK.

The insurer is also advising owners to consider safe storage of their motorhome in order to prevent vandalism or theft over the dark winter months.

Top tips from Shield Total Insurance, on how best to ‘winterise’ motorhomes, include:

• Always drain down the hot and cold water systems

Remove all cushions, pillows and bedding and if possible, store in your home
(If not, remove the seat and back cushions and place them, end on end, in the centre walkway of the vehicle)

Open all internal doors and cupboards to allow the air to circulate

• Thoroughly clean out all cupboards and ensure that no crumbs or open food packets remain in the vehicle

• Thoroughly clean out the fridge/freezer with bicarb of soda or anti-bacterial liquid. Leave the door propped open to avoid pressure build up and a stagnant smell

Ensure all windows and vents are locked shut, unobstructed and secure. Close all blinds/curtains for extra security

• Use a good quality cleaner and winter preparation product to keep the exterior of vehicles in tip top condition

• Use a high quality, breathable cover to help keep vehicles clean and dry

• Help prevent condensation and humidity inside vehicles by using dehumidifying products

Remove the leisure battery if possible and keep the charge topped up every 5-6 weeks

• If you can, remove all gas cylinders and store in an adequately ventilated location. If not ensure that all cylinders are fully turned off and the gas compartment is locked
(Remember when storing Butane gas, it begins to freeze at temperatures below 4 degrees C. Propane does not.)

Carry out periodic inspections of the vehicle over winter to ensure that there is no damp inside and to ensure it is holding out against the frost

During the long, dark winter months, motorhomes are also at risk of being vandalised if they are not stored safely and securely.

Stuart Craig, Shield’s Sales and Marketing Manager, says: “Throughout the winter, motorhomes are not only exposed to extreme weather conditions, but they can also be tempting targets for thieves or vandals if they are not parked in secure storage sites.”

Shield Total Insurance is a key supporter of the Caravan Storage Site Owners’ Association (CaSSOA) and recognises the high standard of security provided by its secure storage sites.

“We are urging motorhomers to use approved storage providers such as CaSSOA (www.cassoa.co.uk),” Stuart adds. “And for those who decide to use its Gold-rated approved secure storage facilities, we will allow a discount of up to 10%.”
