All-new Ford-based Atlas adopts a totally new look

The Pilote V600G X Edition

Pilote was the latest marque to add Ford Transit-based low-profile motorhomes to its range when it announced the Atlas at the Stuttgart show in January. Now there’s a second layout in the new line-up and both are confirmed for sale in the UK, with the first examples due here in September.

Celebrating its sixtieth anniversary, Pilote has not built on Ford chassis for many years but its new Atlas range has a distinct style that is a refreshing departure from the rest of its portfolio. Described as being designed for “adventure enthusiasts seeking versatility and practicality in a compact format”, the company sees these models as appealing to campervan customers looking for more space. As such, they are slimmer than a typical coachbuilt motorhome, at 2.19m, and both layouts have a 3,500kg maximum weight and overall length of less than 7m.

Évidence additions

Like the existing Évidence range (on Fiat Ducato), the new Atlas comes with a high standard spec, so there are no factory options. Meanwhile, the Évidence continues into 2024 with one model dropped (the P650C compact island bed layout, which is still available in Expression spec) and two added – the P740FGJ and G740FGJ.

These are 7.45m and 7.49m long respectively and represent single bed layouts in both low-profile and A-class form, each with a side settee lounge. They are priced at £81,200 and £90,700.

X for Xtra

Based on the success of Évidence and its one-spec-fits-all approach, the Pilote campervan range gained X-Edition models last year, based on the Classic trim but with more kit. These are only just starting to filter through to the UK, so can almost be considered 2024-season news.

There are four X-Edition models – V540G (5.41m, transverse bed), V600G (5.99m, transverse bed), V630J (6.36m, twin beds) and V633M (6.36m, extra-high, electric rising bed over rear garage) – with prices ranging from £70,220 to £75,120.

The V600G, which adopts perhaps Europe’s most popular campervan floorplan, is updated for the new season. It gains a wider bed (1.50m), thanks to the wardrobe alongside being deleted.

There’s also a new kitchen, with a more modern, angular design, for all the Van range. On a final note, Pilote is addressing sustainability, switching sourcing of its wood from Indonesia to Europe. It has also improved control of interior lighting in the models, so customers use less 12V power.

French manufacturer, Pilote, revealed its all-new Ford Transit-based Atlas range earlier in 2023 and has now launched a second layout, both of which are on sale here.

Celebrating its sixtieth anniversary, Pilote has not built on Ford chassis for many years, but its new Atlas range has a distinct style. The manufacturer sees the Atlas as appealing to campervan customers looking for more space. As such, the new models are slimmer than a typical coachbuilt motorhome, at 2.19m, and both layouts have a 3,500kg maximum weight and are less than 7m long.

Based on the Transit in Trail spec, the Atlas models have a mechanical limited slip differential, black 16in alloy wheels fitted with all-season tyres and a bold grille. They come as standard with the 168bhp (170PS) engine and automatic transmission. The new, angular design of the overcab moulding (with sunroof) is said to echo the shape of the Ford grille, while the graphics and styling give the vehicles an SUV-style appearance.

Both layouts have a spacious front lounge with side-facing sofas (converting into one forward-facing seat and one rear-facing on the nearside for travel) and a drop-down double bed above.

It’s at the rear where the two models differ. The longer (6.99m) A696G has a fixed transverse double bed over a large garage. It costs £85,000, while its baby brother, the A656D, is £500 cheaper and shorter (6.60m), with the main bed in this version being the electric drop-down double above the lounge. Measuring 1.89m by 1.40m, this bed comes right down to seat height. Then, at the rear, the A656D has a large dressing area with neat storage boxes and hanging space as well as generous room to use the ablutions facilities.
