New tyre labels introduced

A new label system was introduced at the beginning of May this year, following concerns that vehicle owners are not aware of the key differences between highest and lowest rated tyres. 

Labels were previously fixed to tyres, which often the consumers don’t see as they are fitted to vehicles direct from stock rooms. Now the labels will be digital and retailers are required to provide the information to customers.  

Labels will still show a tyre’s fuel efficiency, braking performance in the wet and the amount of road noise it generates, however the ratings will drop from seven classifications to five – A to E like domestic appliances, with E below the lowest rating. 

The new labels will also show if the tyre has an alpine rating and is suitable for use on snow. 

Stuart Jackson, chair of tyre maintenance and safety charity, TyreSafe, said: “The key point of tyre labelling is to help those choosing a tyre to make an informed decision. There is concern that owners typically only consider cost and don’t appreciate there may be tyres that are more suitable and offer better value but perhaps at a higher price.

"It’s in the interest of vehicle owners to make themselves aware of the information contained on the new tyre label to cut costs in fuel, as well as improve their safety.”
