The news that demand for motorhomes and campervans has jumped by 133% on Gumtree since the start of this year was followed by the revelation that, for the first time, motorhomes have been added to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
In practice, this means they are now part of the 760 items used to help determine the UK inflation rate.
“The increasing interest in motorhomes and campervans tallies with our own research, which reveals that almost half (44%) of British drivers would like to buy a motorhome or campervan in 2026.
“Worryingly, the same survey also shows that a similar proportion (40%) are unaware that it’s illegal to drive a motorhome or campervan without a dedicated insurance policy that’s separate from their standard motor policy,” said Mark Sheppard from insurance specialist, Safeguard.
Other additions to the CPI basket include houmous, alcohol-free beer, pet grooming services and dashboard cameras. Motorhomes, alongside the other new additions, have replaced items including sheets of wrapping paper and bottled premium lager bought in pubs and restaurants.
