Moray Council to consult on overnight campervan stays

Moray Council, Scotland, has announced a plan to consult with local communities to manage overnight stays for motorhomes and campervans on designated council-owned sites.

The proposed scheme has been set up to support sustainable tourism while ensuring the concerns of local communities are addressed. Local residents, businesses and community groups will be asked of their thoughts and concerns before a final decision, and report, is made.

Chair of Moray Council’s Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, Cllr Marc Macrae, said,

"Tourism plays a key role in Moray’s economy, and we recognise the growing popularity of campervan and motorhome travel. This consultation will allow us to explore how we might provide suitable overnight parking locations and allow us to understand the views of the local communities before any decision is made."

Initial locations proposed include sites at:

  • Lossiemouth
  • Portgordon
  • Craigellachie
  • Buckie
  • Forres
  • Cullen
  • Burghead
  • Ballindalloch
  • Aberlour

During the consultation, Moray Council say it will open the floor for residents to suggest other potential locations, too. The council says finer detail of the consultation process will be shared in due course, including the production of a report into the findings for the consideration of members.

Members of the public can have their say by completing a 10-minute online survey. The survey asks a variety of questions including what the individuals association to Moray is, which areas in the local vicinity to they tend to visit, and what the they think the negative impacts to the area could potentially be, should stopovers take place.

The survey will run for 4 weeks and will close at 5pm on 16 May 2025.
