Venture S influences

Last year, Hymer’s Venture S motorhome impressed us with its innovation and style, so much so that it took the overall Motorhome of the Year title for 2023. It was brimming with unique features; however, at well over £200k it was out of reach for most motorhomers.

Hymer has done something to rectify this by adding many of the features to its Mercedes-based low-profile ML-T and Grand Canyon S campervan, offering totally overhauled models for the coming year. The ethos behind the new designs was to provide increased self-sufficiency, more contemporary design, improved ergonomics and increased connectivity.

In the ML-T there’s more than a hint of Venture S in the redesign, especially if you choose the Native Bamboo décor (Velvet Ash is the alternative), while the Grand Canyon S has a choice of grey/oak or green/grey, the latter with the Venture S wall cladding.

Self-sufficiency is a watchword of both models to ensure that heading off the beaten track is no problem. Thanks to the new Smart Battery System 2.0, compressor fridges and diesel heating (previously gas), you will be more independent on your travels for longer – gas is now only required for cooking. While one 80Ah lithium battery is standard, there is space for up to three more, and you can specify an 1,800W inverter and two 95W solar panels. Inside, the ML-T layout retains a half-dinette lounge and single beds over the garage but the influence of the Venture S is soon obvious, from the tiled wall and matt black fittings in the kitchen to the real leather straps on the overhead lockers’ catches. Ambient lighting can now be individually adjusted, while a pendant lamp hangs over the table á la Venture S or becomes a slot-in downlight over the sofa.

Attention has been paid to improved ergonomics in the bedroom, so you’ll no longer hit your head on the overhead lockers as the back wall has a felt-covered S-shape design.

The Grand Canyon S has a transverse bed, but now the mattress has built-in supports, eschewing the need for springs or slats on the bases. This makes the conversion to storage easier as you simply roll up the mattress against the wall and fold up the boards.

Both can also be linked to the Hymer Connect app, which allows the control of lighting, heating, etc, while also viewing the exact water levels and remaining battery charge percentage.

Highlights of Hymer 2024 motorhomes and campervans

  • ML-T Mercedes low-profile sees an extensive redesign, taking interior design cues from its Venture S sibling as well as numerous other changes to improve comfort, functionality and standard kit.

  • Hymer Connect app rolls out to Grand Canyon S and ML-T as well as Fiat-based campervans, B-Class Masterline A-class and low profiles, B-Class ModernComfort A-class and low profiles, and Venture S.

  • Hymer Free S Campus special edition on Mercedes is new. It comes with the 170bhp engine, automatic gearbox, reversing camera, 10in MBUX cab display, blue-grey exterior, pop-top roof and a special interior.

Hymer’s Mercedes-based low-profile has been around since 2015, but this year sees the biggest changes. There are three key cornerstones to the new model: self sufficiency, comfort and connectivity. In terms of design, it’s clear to see that the new interior has been inspired by that we first saw in the Venture S last year.

Here, we’ve picked the all-new 580 model, which offers many of the benefits of that groundbreaking Venture S, and with a comprehensive equipment package as standard. That list includes two 95W solar panels, and Hymer original Smart Battery System which blends two 150Ah lithium batteries with a 95Ah conventional lead version. This is accompanied by an inverter, which will allow you to camp away from electric hook-up for longer; for up to 10 days, in fact.

LED light bars above the cab allow enhanced vision when driving at night, particularly useful for shorter days in winter and when you want to maximise your itinerary. Plus, that all-wheel drive is electronically controlled and delivers torque on demand – as well as gripping terrain off-road, this system offers better traction and improved driving stability. A neat touch is the button to empty the waste water from inside, while the chequerplate on the garage floor will be both practical and robust.

Externally, the silver body with black-grey cab contrasts with distinct decals and are much bolder than the norm. Inside, the twin single beds sit on disc springs, and are positioned above a spacious garage area, perfect for all your adventure kit. Though the washroom is an all-in-one affair, its swing wall makes a practical shower area. The kitchen is opposite, with a worktop extension, while the L-shaped lounge has travel seats and makes into a third berth.

There’s too many other options to list, so head to the Hymer website for the full list…

Like the new ML-T, Hymer’s Mercedes-based 4x4 campervan has also been given a makeover, taking some elements from its Venture S sibling. It, too, has been designed to be more self sufficient, more comfortable and better connected.

There’s that modular battery system that offers 80Ah of LiFePO4 (lithium) batteries as standard, with the option to increase fourfold. These batteries are perfect for motorhomes, being lighter and more efficient than their lead acid equivalents. Insulation levels are better than ever, too, while a 90-litre compressor fridge and diesel heating will allow you to stay off-grid for longer. There’s even a button to allow you to drain the waste water from inside the vehicle.

Inside, you can choose from two new décors – oak effect locker doors and grey felt-look material on the walls, or the olive green furniture. Though the layout remains similar to the outgoing model, the rear bed has a new feature: the mattresses have integral springs and can be rolled up to increase the storage flexibility in this area.

An award-winning (MMM’s Motorhome of the Year as well as a Red Dot Design Award) motorhome that stole all the attention last year after its launch.

Originally devised as a concept, the Vision Venture, an impressive number of design features made it into the production model, including a drop-down tailgate balcony, staircase to the bedroom in the inflatable roof, and curved rear windows for a great view out.

Inside the Venture S
A look inisde the Venture S

There’s so much to talk about, from the table that slides away into a recess under the seats in the Brit-friendly rear lounge to a washroom that expands to create more space or pushes away to increase the living area. There’s also a handy desk area at the front, for catching up on emails, or using your computer to research your next destination. The interior wall system with multifunctional rails has already been added into the Grand Canyon S and ML-T for this season.

It’s fair to say that this motorhome will certainly stand out from the crowd, wherever you are.
