That’s not to say the 780 has a compact washroom – far from it. The generous shower sits opposite the toilet cubicle, with a swing door to shut off the rear from the front lounge.

There’s also a sliding door to provide privacy for sleepers when the washroom is in use. The star feature of this layout, though, is the twin single beds at the rear. Steps lead up to wide beds on either side, but it’s the details that count, such as the curved edge to the central wooden surface between the two and the small shelf unit with quilted covering offering power sockets for your devices.

While this is the most compact model in the range, the use of occasional shelves above the windows creates a much more open area here. Also note the storage in the steps and the wardrobe doors under the foot of each bed.

However, the rest of the floor area, from washroom to cab, is step free – thanks to a double floor. The internal floor is laid at the same level as the cab – many models often step down from cab to motorhome floor or have a raised floor in the lounge only.

This extra space between motorhome floor and chassis is not lost, though, with 36cm of space used for utilities and for storage, all of which is fully winterised for year-round use. And while we’re talking about the practical stuff, the chassis here is Hymer’s own, called SLC, which offers independent suspension on the wheels for better on-road stability.

The kitchen area is clearly defined with a dark grey wall covering; it’s a stylish touch that enhances the open-plan feel to the front of the motorhome. The curved unit between galley and seating also helps with this as well as protecting lounge seating from enthusiastic (or messy) chefs.

There’s loads of storage in this area; however, the one fly in the ointment for some will be the position of the oven/grill – it’s above the tall 153-litre fridge and might be too far of a stretch.

At the very front of the motorhome, wall coverings have changed once again to a soft grey, offering a cosier feel. This L-shaped lounge and small side sofa are comfy, thanks to the use of two types of foam (for support when travelling and with a little more give for relaxing) but most people will choose those superb cab seats once on site. The fact this this is an A-class body means these two seats feel just as part of the lounge as the rest of the seating.

There is a large double bed that drops down into the cab – you’ll just need to fold the cab seats down to accommodate this. Usefully the bed doesn’t eat into the lounge when deployed and the more nimble can simply use the lounge seats to access the sleeping area.

Note that if you think you’ll never need this bed you can opt for lockers at the front instead (giving you 16kg of payload back).

Hymer’s own panoramic rooflight has a lower profile inside, lessening the impact on headroom and a winding handle opens and closes it.

Other notable features include the large garage, under the twin single beds, with a low floor for easier loading, while the Connect app allows all sorts of functions to be controlled from a mobile phone. Also, if you can, take a look at the iconic Hymer striped design to the rear lights – fantastic!

Our verdict

Like Everest is the ‘mountain of mountains’ Hymer reckons this MasterLine I defines the category of A-class motorhomes. And it proves that well-thought-out luxury models don’t have to be massive.
