As soon as Volkswagen announced the launch of its all-electric ID Buzz in 2022, the race was on for converters to create the first ID Buzz campervan, and one of the first will now be available to hire

Wild Drives is an exclusively electric campervan hire company that launched its original electric camper in 2022, and now it has one of the first UK conversions based on the award-winning VW ID Buzz (watch our review video of the ID Buzz here), which is available to hire from £150 per night.

Unveiled at the Fully Charged Live show in Farnborough on 28 April, and also appearing at the Campervan Campout, which took place at the South of England Showground in West Sussex from 5-7 May, the eye-catching luxury camper was converted by East Sussex-based artisan converter, Love Campers.

It features a side-facing settee that pulls out to form a slatted bed alongside the kitchenette, which includes an induction hob, sink and fridge. The interior is made with a modern ply laminate and bamboo for a bright and retro feel.

The campervan also offers a powerful lithium battery and a solar panel on the roof, making it functional as a totally off-grid experience without burning fossil fuels.

All Wild Drives’ campers have been built by Love Campers in their environmentally certified workshop, using sustainable materials and processes. All the wood used is FSC certified and the campers have natural fibre for insulation. Each campervan also comes with a litter picker and sustainable bin liners as well as a compost bin for food waste, which is collected and composted at the end of the trip.

Wild Drives’ founder, Lewis Nyman, says his company was started, “to protect the beauty of nature for future generations” and to provide “customers with a unique and eco-friendly travel experience.”

Love Campers Director, Clara Usiskin, says,

The Buzz campervan brings together the best features of vintage VW campers, with modern design and cutting-edge sustainability. These campervans are really special, and we are thrilled to have created something wonderful for Wild Drives and their customers.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz base vehicle has a classic look reminiscent of the 1970s VW Type 2 married with modern technology. It has a WLTP range of 208 miles and a charging time of 5% to 80% in 30 minutes on DC rapid charging (replenishing an empty battery on a 7kW home wallbox will take up to 11 hours). What Car? named the ID Buzz as Best Large Electric Car of the Year and declared it the magazine’s Car of the Year for 2023.

The two-tone camper will be available to hire within the next few weeks.
