Check your breakdown cover when driving in Europe
Insurance specialist says it is alerted to an average of 25 breakdowns and two vehicle repatriations by its customers in the EU each month.

We’re right into the thick of summer now which means Brits up and down the country are making their pre-holiday preparations for their motorhome and campervan adventures. Insurance specialist Safeguard has warned motorhome and campervan owners of the importance of having sufficient breakdown cover before they head off to Europe.
Mark Sheppard, Senior Trading Manager at Safeguard, said,
Owners can often neglect to take out breakdown cover when travelling abroad.
This may not be included in your European policy as standard, so it’s always worth checking your policy documents and confirming with your insurance provider if in any doubt. Breakdown cover is particularly important for older or low-value vehicles, where the cost of repairs and repatriation could exceed their value.
Here's what you'll need to take with you:
- A UK sticker, prominently displayed, not a traditional GB one
- Your log book (V5C)
- Your driving licence
- Your MoT certificate
- A copy of your insurance policy
- A green card for countries outside the EU
Safeguard also highlights how holidaymakers should be aware of low-emission zones throughout Europe and especially in France. It suggests that motorhome and campervan, owners should register for either stickers or certification.
