One new model, many choices

The addition of these two new models – the low-profile and A-class versions of the new c-tourer 145 RB LE – brings the total to 60 coachbuilt variants now available from Carthago, across six A-class ranges and two low-profile ranges. Other than the arrival of this new 145 RB LE and the addition of a new Superior special edition, the German manufacturer is leaving the rest of its line-up largely unchanged for the coming season.

Both versions of the new c-tourer 145 RB LE are available on either a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter or a Fiat Ducato cab, coupled to an Al-Ko chassis. Two different engines are available in each: 140 or 180bhp for the Ducato and the 150 or 170bhp for the Sprinter, as well as the option of the standard six-speed manual gearbox or nine-speed automatic transmission for each of these four variants.

The new models feature the same layout inside, whether in A-class or low-profile form, with the exception of the drop-down cab bed in the A-class. The layout is a proven one across Europe, featuring fixed rear single beds that are up to two metres long. The beds are easy to access thanks to optional, pull-out access steps, and can be converted into one large luxurious sleeping area using an extension, if required. Both beds have divided mattresses and slats.

The wardrobes beneath them are easy to access from above or the front using a lift function and a hinged door. All-round overhead storage cabinets and open corner shelving can be used to store linen and small items. Below the rear beds is a spacious garage capable of carrying bikes or a scooter and there is a full double floor with a huge amount of storage.

In front of the beds is the washroom/changing room typical of the brand. The entire washroom area can be closed off from the front to create a huge en suite and, by using a solid wooden sliding door, the bedroom can be separated from the washroom and changing room to make it a completely private space.

Forward of this is Carthago’s ‘comfort corner kitchen’, which, in the launch models, did not feature an oven but it is expected UK models will have one fitted. What they do feature as standard is a three-ring gas hob with divided glass cover and a round stainless-steel sink. A raised kitchen worktop with an additional work surface separates the kitchen from the lounge seating. The 133-litre Slimtower fridge features a door that opens from both sides and is placed opposite the kitchen.

At the front is an L-shaped lounge with an additional individual seat, which is also typical of the brand. The 32in flatscreen TV mounted in the entrance can be extended inwards and rotated by 90 degrees into a horizontal position for viewing.

The previously optional Casablanca décor is standard on the new c-tourer 145 RB LE, and has undergone further development, such as a new backlit panel in anthracite that catches your eye as you enter and can also be found on the wall between the kitchen and shower room, and as a panel in front of the control panel above the entrance door. The wall to the washroom now also comes with vertical, chrome-plated inlays.

The newest c-tourer also inherits other practical features from its siblings, including the one-level floor in the living area, the swing-out shoe cabinet in the base of the settee, the accent lighting in the footwell area, the table which is easy to move using a pedal, the optional capsule coffee maker and the seven-zone quality cold foam mattresses.

Depending on the version chosen, the length of the new c-tourer T/I 145 RB LE ranges from 6.98m to 7.18m. Carthago has developed these new models to be around 30 to 50cm shorter than comparable motorhomes, it says, which is part of a drive to offer more 3,500kg motorhomes.

Externally, the new model also features a redesigned rear panel with curved corner pillars and striking rear lights with the typical c-branding. This new rear design also provides additional interior length (5cm), thanks to its construction. In addition, the Mercedes cab on low-profile versions is optionally available in Obsidian Black instead of the standard Arctic White finish. A-class models get bus-style mirrors.

As with all Carthagos, the new c-tourer is constructed with full aluminium sandwich side walls, a floor panel with top and bottom of GRP, a full double floor and a roof with hail-resistant GRP.

The A-class c-tourer I 145 RB LE is optionally also available in a new Superior specification, which adds extra design features to what is already a high-spec motorhome. On the exterior there are brand-specific Carthago full LED headlights. Inside, the Superior models come with Nuovo styling, which sees features such as the overhead locker doors in bicolour high-gloss ivory and Brilliant Ash. Their handles are also recessed to provide a sleek appearance, while the underside of the cabinets has a matt ivory finish. Also new are the panels on the rear wall of the washroom and behind the lounge side seat, which are in Brilliant Ash with vertical, black joints.

  • New c-tourer 145 RB LE in either a low-profile (T) or A-class (I) added.

  • A-class c-tourer I 145 RB LE is optionally also available in a new Superior specification, which adds extra design features to what is already a high-spec motorhome: brand-specific Carthago full LED headlights, Nuovo styling (overhead locker doors in bicolour, high-gloss ivory and Brilliant Ash, along other things) with recessed handles.

  • All Carthago models are made with full aluminium-sandwich side walls, a floor panel with top and bottom made of GRP, a full double floor and a roof made with hail-resistant GRP.

  • Carthago motorhomes provide year-round comfort, thanks to the installation of heat-reflecting walls, targeted heating of the on-board equipment and heat circulation throughout the double floor.

Depends on model chosen

One model, several options – that’s the ethos behind Carthago’s premium motorhomes and campervans, and the newest model in the c-tourer range, the 145 RB LE, is no different

First, pick a low-profile (T) or an A-class (I). Then, choose between the Fiat Ducato or the premium Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, both with the Al-Ko low-frame chassis, allowing for a double floor. Both offer two different power levels with a manual or automatic gearbox.

No matter which of these options you choose, it’s worth taking a walk around the back of the motorhome to check out the new rear panel, with curved corner pillars and distinctive lights. It’s not all about looks, though, as this panel also creates 5cm more length for the interior.

Finally, step inside to what Carthago calls its Casablanca ‘World of Style’ in standard models, which means light oak and contrasting cream gloss in layman’s terms. Or, in the A-class form, there’s a special edition Superior, which offers the Nuovo décor, handleless top lockers for a more streamlined look and much more.

The seating area features the swivel seats, an L-shaped sofa and a side settee. The table slides every which way for access and dining comfort, while a dedicated shoe rack under the side seat is very practical. The TV is also mounted by the entrance at a sensible height.

Further back, the kitchen has oodles of storage, a 133-litre fridge, and the lounge divider can act as a shelf with a slot for extra worktop. The washroom is split across the aisle to the bedroom, with the shower on one side and the toilet and basin on the other. Two doors allow this area to be closed off from the bedroom and front accordingly.

And so to bed, with twin singles measuring up to 2m in length. Access using the steps or with a pull-out extension when the infill cushions are deployed to make a double bed. Wardrobes are underneath, which can be accessed from above or through a door.

This is one of Carthago’s most popular ‘Liner-class’ ranges and it’s fair to say that, again, the choices allow you to tailor the motorhome to your wishes. Fiat or Mercedes chassis are available, with six floorplans offering single or island beds.

In this range you get two choices when it comes to the ‘World of Style’, and all come with a large round table in the lounge, electric central locking for kitchen cupboards, pull-out worktop, cocktail cabinet, swing-out shoe rack and a very useful electric pleated blind for the cab.

It’s not just about style, either, as there are lots of practical features to make life on the road easier. A heated double floor contains all the services, as well as loads of storage, the 235-litre fresh water tank and 185-litre waste tank provide greater self sufficiency and the rear storage area is capable of accommodating a scooter, with up to a 132cm height and a load capacity of 450kg.

One of a new breed of Liner-class motorhomes, the liner-for-two essentially flips the traditional layout, placing the lounge at the rear and the beds at the front. The way it does this is very neat.

You step on board into the kitchen area, turning right to the washroom and the cab and left to the lounge. Walk through the washroom and simply lower the cab bed electrically to reveal two single beds. Steps slide out from the side units to make access easier, too. This also shuts off the cab, making this feel more apartment-like when on site.

A look inisde the Liner-for-two

The lounge is no standard twin sofa or U-shaped affair; it’s basically a C-shape with an option for one of the sofas to slide out even further.

You can also specify a 40in TV here that rises from behind the dresser and sofa. The two layouts are primarily the same, but the extra length of the 53 L adds to the lounge and load space at the rear. Simply luxurious…
