Why the Ecowagon Expo+?

Ecowagon is virtually in a class of its own when it comes to VW campervans. It offers a full line-up of models but most of its builds are the top-of-the-range Expo+. Once you’ve seen one, you wouldn’t want anything less!

There are no surprises with the layout – a rear bench/bed and side kitchen – but why would you mess with what works best in a Volkswagen Transporter? Where the Expo+ excels is in its build quality and spec.

There are certainly cheaper pop-tops than Reimo’s Easy Fit, but German roofs are considered to be the best and Ecowagon mates this to its own roof bed with Froli springs and a sliding panel to hide the canvas above the cab.

The seat system, meanwhile, is borrowed from Volkswagen’s own camper, the California Ocean, but repurposed to sit on the nearside. Here, the seat is retrimmed in the finest leather (as standard), to match the cab chairs, both of which rotate and can be upgraded with more supportive Sportbacks.

What is inside?

Not only does the rear seat have a relaxing reclined position but it slides along covered floor rails – ideal if you have young children or want to increase the load space.

On the outside, the Expo+ has a Thule awning and opening windows are fitted on both sides. The glazing is flush, too. And on the inside are Ecowagon’s custom thermal blinds.

Other standard features include a 150W solar panel, dimmable LED lighting, an underslung gas tank, external shower and barbecue points, rear speakers, a wireless phone charging station, and Eberspächer Aitronic diesel heating.

What else does it have to offer?

The kitchen is handcrafted at Ecowagon’s Cornish factory with soft-close drawers, edge banding and a stylish curved worktop. Top lockers provide extra storage and everything is finished to the highest standards.

The show model here, based on a 148bhp DSG Highline Transporter with desirable options such as heated cab seats, sat-nav and LED headlights, was priced at £96,642. That includes the optional duo-tone paint, panoramic roof canvas and a lithium battery upgrade. If you want the very best T6.1, get your order in while you still can.

CMC HemBil Escape-SL

One issue that you have to consider when choosing a VW camper is the width of the seat/bed. A wider seat equals a wider bed, which can make a huge difference to your night-time comfort and it can also allow three seatbelts to be fitted on the rear bench.

However, a wider seat also means a narrower kitchen, often with a loss of facilities or storage. Here, the Escape-SL makes a great compromise, especially with the optional top-loading fridge.

From CMC’s HemBil range, this model also has the top-quality Reimo pop-top and, even more importantly, the sliding Variotech seat system that offers more comfort and more versatility. Practical design, sensible pricing and top-notch quality make this a great all-rounder.

Highly commended

Out And About Campers Contemporary

It’s great to be able to give a commendation to such a young company; Sussex-based Out And About Campers only started converting customers’ vans in October 2020.

There is nothing unusual about the side kitchen layout or the use of popular components, but the galley in the company’s Contemporary model stands out as living up to its name. A double passenger seat in the cab is not something we’re usually keen on but Out And About Campers uses a swivel base that also slides, so a four-person dinette can be created. There’s a laudable aim to be environmentally aware, too, with bamboo employed for the worktops and tambour doors.
