Airport hassles drive Brits to choose caravan over foreign travel

A survey of 2,000 UK holidaymakers found that 53% are more likely to opt for a motorhome, caravan or holiday home trip than travel abroad by plane next year. Airport disruption emerged as a key factor behind the shift, with flight delays cited as the biggest annoyance by almost half of respondents. Lost luggage, baggage restrictions, queues and airport parking charges were also among the most common complaints.

While overseas holidays remain popular, the appeal of touring breaks appears to lie in flexibility and control. Over half of those surveyed said the biggest advantage of a touring holiday is the freedom to move around, while two thirds felt no other type of holiday offers the same level of spontaneity. Being able to explore at their own pace, both in the UK and abroad, was consistently rated as one of the strongest draws.

More than half cite value for money when opting for domestic holidays

Cost is also playing a major role. With the cost of living continuing to influence travel decisions, more than half of respondents said value for money was a key consideration when choosing how to holiday. Touring breaks were seen as offering greater control over spending, alongside practical benefits such as travelling with pets and retaining familiar home comforts.

The findings reflect wider interest in touring holidays, which continue to attract both experienced travellers and first-time buyers. Jillyanne Lamarra, Show Manager of the Scottish Motorhome, Caravan and Holiday Home Show, said the results echoed what many touring fans already know: that flexible travel allows people to decide where, when and how they go, without the pressures often associated with flying.

The research was commissioned by the Scottish Motorhome, Caravan and Holiday Home Show.
