A historic caravan site with royal roots
Sandringham has long held a special place in UK touring. The campsite has been operated by the Club since the 1970s, originally developed within the Royal Estate under the guidance of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It first opened in 1977 during a landmark year for the Club and quickly became one of its most recognisable destinations. A further reopening followed in 1997 after expansion works, and the latest investment continues that long-standing tradition of evolving the site while respecting its woodland setting.
The 2026 reopening ceremony was led by Thomas Coke, 8th Earl of Leicester, alongside senior figures from the Club, including Chair David Turner and Chief Executive Harvey Alexander.
The Sandringham campsite now caters to a wider mix of visitors, from traditional caravan and motorhome users to tent campers and those looking for a more premium glamping experience.
At the same time, it retains what has always made it popular, a peaceful woodland setting, direct access to royal parkland and easy links to the Norfolk coast and nearby King’s Lynn.
A landmark moment for caravanning in the UK
With royal recognition, a significant investment and a clear focus on the future, the reopening of Sandringham marks an important moment for the UK caravan and camping sector.
It’s a campsite that blends heritage with modern touring, and this latest chapter ensures it remains one of the country’s standout destinations for years to come.
