Hymer Buys Caravan Makers, The Explorer Group
German caravan and motorhome manufacturer, the Erwin Hymer Group, announced today that it has bought out Consett-based manufacturer, The Explorer Group.
The Explorer Group makes caravans and motorhomes under the Buccaneer, Compass, Elddis, and Xplore brands. It is well known for its 'SoLiD' construction method which, the company states, makes their caravans stronger, lighter and 'water ingress-free'. The construction method has been successful, almost doubling the company's sales over the last eight years, according to Rob Quine, managing director of the Group.
With around 17% market share in caravans and 11% in motorhomes in the UK, the Explorer Group is one of the three top companies in the British market. Founded in the mid-60s, the firm employs 400 people from its offices near Newcastle.
The British company is a good fit for the Erwin Hymer. The Explorer Group knows the British market well and they will help their new German owners grow their business in the UK. The Erwin Hymer Group now sells its Bürstner, Carado, Dethleffs, Eriba, Hymer, Laika, Niesmann+Bischoff, and Sunlight brands into the UK. Having a British factory will help them get deeper into the local market.
Rob Quine stated:
“As a new member of the Erwin Hymer Group, we will have access to unique know-how and expertise. We will exploit this strategic opportunity to create permanent added value for our customers.”
With the acquisition, The Explorer Group company will close and become the Erwin Hymer Group UK Ltd.
