Celebrating 50 years of Spinney: UK’s trusted dealer

Family-run Spinney hits 50 years

From independent local dealer to a multi-outlet national dealership.

Spinney has evolved into a franchised dealer with six outlets throughout England and Wales, is celebrating 50 years in-business this year.

A family run business

Over the last five decades, Spinney has grown to become one of the country’s most important and influential dealer groups, yet has remained a family business, as Managing Director, Charlie Holland, who works alongside his brother, Ben, explains:

“We currently operate across the UK with sites in Cheshire, Staffordshire, Flintshire, two in Northampton and one in Warwickshire with 185 staff across the sites.”

The dealership prides itself on working closely with British leisure vehicle manufacturers and holds franchises to retail models from all the key British marques: Auto-Trail, Bailey, Coachman, Elddis and Swift, as well as two European marques – Roller Team and Adria, for which it holds the franchise to retail Adria campervans and motorhomes.

Despite now growing to become a major multi-outlet dealership, Spinney is still managed and run by the same family

“We have been trading for 50 years and are built on very solid foundations.

"We know the importance of offering a great aftersales service and we are constantly investing in our dealerships to make sure we can continue to be a market leader,“

We have a wealth of knowledge across the group and we also have some very loyal team members with many of the team working here for ten years plus and 10% the team working for 20 years or more!”

Going national

Fifty years ago, the Spinney business began at its original site in Chelford, Cheshire, when Ben and Charlie’s father began a motorhome and car dealership and quickly moved solely into selling motorhomes.

The company grew and eventually moved to the current site in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire where a new showroom, workshop and facilities were built. As Spinney continued to grow, the family involvement increased, starting with Nick (Ben and Charlie’s older brother) followed by the two younger brothers all working alongside their father, also called Nick.

Ben explains:

“Unfortunately the family experienced some terrible years, loosing Nick junior who was aged 26, in 2010, to a sudden heart attack and, later, Nick senior aged 56 in 2012 after a battle with cancer. From this date, we have headed the business to keep the Spinney legacy going,”

Since then, the business continued to grow by acquiring more outlets. This started with North Staffs Caravans in 2015 and then Flintshire Caravans in 2018.

Charlie added:

“The desire to grow always remained although slowed by Covid, we waited for the right locations to become available. We have been offered many sites across the UK; however, we waited until the right size, location and, most importantly, cultural match became available,”

Then, last year, an opportunity arose to acquire the White Arches from administration and BroadlaneKenilworth prior to Broadlane going into administration.

“The acquisition of these sites happened in an extremely short time period, both took place in the first half of 2024. Myself and Ben both understood that, although we had been put into our position through horrible passings, we wanted to create our own legacy at Spinney. We knew that our dad had given us an extremely strong starting point with brilliant foundations. However, we wanted to grow Spinney to be UK-wide and not just northwest based.

"Both of these locations are very well respected, long-standing dealerships with teams on site who have a very in-depth knowledge of how the industry works... We felt that, given the right direction, these sites would flourish and we are seeing that already. We have plans to develop these locations over time.

"Currently we have no immediate plans to expand. However, if a location became available that suited Spinney, we are always looking to improve and develop. Our focus and energy currently are centred on our sites; looking for ways to improve our customer journey and internally striving for efficiencies to ensure the future of Spinney remains bright. As a company we know we can improve and as a management team we are always looking how this can be implemented, we remain passionate about being the very best we can be.

"Spinney, of course, sells the trio of leisure vehicles – motorhomes, caravans and campervans – and, while some dealers are focussing less on caravans, Spinney intends to continue to sell all three.

Many people have an assumption that Spinney is a motorhome dealer; they are in fact a caravan, motorhome and campervan dealer with zero intention of changing this. Indeed, 50% of all its sales are caravans.

A culture based on loyalty

While Spinney has grown to become a national dealer group, it remains a family-run business with a culture based on loyalty. “We have a very loyal team who have supported us through some very tough personal times, along with a returning loyal customer base,” explains Ben.

“Spinney sees itself as a one-stop shop for all your motorhome and caravan requirements. We have invested heavily in workshops and aftercare – our father had a saying that ‘sales sell the first ’van and it’s our service that sells the second, third and fourth ’van’. We have never forgotten these words, so are constantly trying to make sure the customers get the service they deserve.”

By retailing a range of leisure vehicles, Spinney has seen first-hand the growth in the popularity of campervans and the subsequent focus on this sector by manufacturers. “The panel van/campervan market has been the quickest growing segment over the last few years and many manufacturers, such as Bailey, Swift and Elddis, have massively increased their offerings on this side,” explains Ben, pointing out another trend amongst buyers. “After Covid, we saw a lot of our caravan and motorhome sales came without a part-exchange against the deal and, speaking with our customers, we noticed that these are all first-time buyers.”

And what were these buyers snapping up? “The Auto-Trail Expedition 68 is our best-selling campervan as it offers great value for money” explains Ben,who says this appetite for value for money and higher specification as standard can be seen in its caravan and motorhome sales, too.

“The Coachman Vogue 575 is our best-selling caravan, as it offers a high level of specification and quality and also comes with extras that are exclusive to Spinney with a unique special in the VIP range. Likewise, the Bailey Adamo 754DL is our best-selling motorhome as it offers a versatile layout with a high level of specification.”

As customers’ demands and expectations change, so manufacturers and their dealers must continually adjust their offerings to suit. After 50 years of doing exactly that and continuing to expand to be-come the national’s second largest dealer group and the only one that remains a family business, all the signs are it will continue to go from strength to strength.

The leisure vehicle that started an empire

One of the first vehicles sold by Spinney in 1975 was a Comma Jennings Roadranger with a large graphic saying ‘Jesus Loves You’ on the side.

More recently, Spinney began searching for an exact match and, in 2023, a Roadranger built in 1970 became available in full working order, with all the original paperwork and just requiring an exterior refurbishment. It had been kept in a barn in Knutsford, which was close to the Cheshire branch.

“We have worked on this gradually, locating the correct parts over the last year ready for our fiftiethanniversary year,” said Charlie. “Our own paint technician at Flintshire worked on it in our dedicated paint facility we are extremely proud of the job he has done.”

Once, completed, the renovated classic motorhome will be showcased at Spinney’s showrooms throughout the UK so customers can see it.
