UK festive breaks delivered £3.3bn boost to domestic tourism

Millions of Brits chose UK holidays through Christmas and New Year
Millions of people travelled within the UK over the Christmas and New Year period, delivering a £3.3 billion boost to domestic tourism at the close of 2025.
New figures from VisitEngland show that around 11.6 million Brits took an overnight break during the festive season – a significant rise on the previous year. The total was almost a third higher than Christmas 2024, when fewer than nine million people opted for a UK stay.
Short breaks and festive experiences drove demand
Short trips proved especially popular. Nearly half of those travelling in England took two or more overnight breaks, often combining family visits with festive activities. Eating out, Christmas markets and post-Christmas shopping featured heavily, while more than one in five people also made time for outdoor activities such as walking or cycling.
Younger people were particularly active, with Christmas markets and seasonal shopping standing out as key attractions.
Late bookings
The figures reflect a wider trend seen throughout 2025, with many people booking late and keeping a close eye on value. Weather and last-minute deals were common deciding factors, even during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
So, as the industry looks ahead to 2026, the festive season has offered a positive reminder of the role UK holidays continue to play and provide a welcomed boost for destinations and tourism businesses at a crucial time of year.
