Woodhill has a very distinctive and special natural environment, and because of the sandy cliff top location and salty sea wind there are only certain species of plants that will thrive here.
Since 1999, the site has been operating a management plan for its grassland area which has turned it into a haven for the huge variety of wildlife that visit or live here. A profusion of wild flowers, nesting birds, majestic red admiral butterflies, the resident fox who ducks through the hedges at night after hunting in the long grass, all these features have earned it the David Bellamy Gold Award each year since 2006.
The site also offers miles of unspoilt coastline to explore, with creeks and inlets, sandy or rocky beaches for swimming, as well as the chance to go fishing or rock pooling.
Enjoy a return ride on the North Norfolk Steam Railway from Sheringham to Holt or a trip to the Thursford Collection of steam engines and organs. Felbrigg Hall, Garden and Park is close by, one of the finest 17th century country houses in East Anglia, while Blickling Hall is a magnificent Jacobean House and Garden.
Close by is the town of Cromer. Stroll along the Cromer promenade whilst a visit to Cromer Pier is a must, the Cromer Museum offers a unique photographic archive of the town while the Geology Gallery has an amazing collection of fossils – all found in Norfolk – and information about the famous West Runton elephant, Britain’s oldest and most complete elephant fossil. Great for a wet day and the children will learn a great deal here. The towns of Sheringham and Holt are a short drive away while further up the coast the coastal villages of Cley and Blakeney are well worth a visit.
