Just feel the sense of space... Across the road from the park are sand dunes that lead to an unbelievably long sandy beach. You’ll almost feel like you’ve got the whole place to yourself! And there are Blue Flag beaches nearby too - mile upon mile of them. Nearby is the relaxed seaside resort of Mablethorpe and up-for-it Skegness, as well as the sedate Lincolnshire Wolds with their historic market towns. ...

It’s quiet, verdant and the main picturesque feature is two coarse fishing lakes. This is the touring area of the gigantic Golden Sands Park, a haven (literally) for family holidays – but in the touring area you could hear a mouse squeak. Or, more likely, a family of Canada geese squawk for attention from the people fishing by the lakes. Bream, carp, roach and tench are resident here; fishing is free but you need a rod licence obtainable from the post office in Mablethorpe.

Golden Sands had been here a long time; it opened in the 1950s at a time when touring sites were just emerging. Haven took it over in 1989. Facilities include two shower buildings each with washing-up areas, there is a laundry – and a bus from outside the entrance every half hour takes you to Mablethorpe; ideal for motorcaravanners who prefer to leave the unit on site. Skegness is nearby, too, complete with Fantasy Island theme park and what is reputed to be Europe’s largest market every day during the summer. You can take a road train into Mablethorpe, too; it stops within the touring park, though the town is only a 15-minute walk away if you’re feeling energetic.

Entertainment is important here. It’s all family orientated, with the Falcon Room featuring a children’s show at the time of our visit (Later on there were cabaret acts aimed at the young, too). There are three children’s clubs, catering for three age groups: The Paws Club for the under fours; the themed Rory and Bradley Club for the eight to 12s; and a third club for the 12 to 16s.

There are also various sporting activities and craft days on site, with a multi-sports court, basketball and football skills coaching on offer. There are pantos once a week plus a visiting cabaret act, too. On site food includes The Quayside Diner, which offers breakfasts and all-day food (in a non-smoking area). There are also fish and chips on offer (eat in or take-away), yet more take-away outlets in the nightclub, a supermarket with a bakery, snacks throughout the day. So there’s no excuse for going hungry here. There are two Showbars plus a quieter bar complete with satellite television. We found air hockey, bowling, a full-size snooker table and 14 pool tables in a splendid quiet room here.

We discovered the Galleon, for entertainment, disco, stuff on stage, plus trampolines, orbiters, a go-kart raceway for adults and young people alike. There’s also an indoor or outdoor pool (open May 27 to the end of September) compete with waterslide.

Contrast all this razzmatazz with the fact that this park is in its fourth years of David Bellamy Gold status and you begin to get some idea of how it appeals to everyone from nature-lovers to fun-lovers. Badgers, Red Admiral butterflies, Canada geese and foxes are frequent visitors. The dunes just outside the park are recognised by English Nature as an important habitat for flowers and birds, Storks bill and cowslip and cranesbill are noted flowers to look for; listed birds include whitethroat, dunnock, linnet and fieldfare.

On the salt marshes, watch for teal, widgeon, skylark and ringed dove. Just across the road from the park and bordering the beach is a small seal sanctuary; it’s home to birds and monkeys, too. A nature reserve stretched for six mile along this coast of dunes, salt marshes and sands. Information boards list birds to watch for as skylark and meadow pippin, dunlin, shelduck and brent geese.
