The AA have awarded Longnor Wood five pennants, something that reflects the high standards aspired to. In 2015 the site won AA Campsite of the Year for the Heart of England. And, judging by the ambience of the place during our visit this is well deserved. Note that it's an adults-only campsite, located deep within the heart of the magnificent Peak District and hidden from the few surrounding roads.
You’ll need to plan well ahead if you’re to stand any chance of bagging one of Longnor Wood’s 47 pitches, all of which offer mains power, and some offer the all-weather reassurance of hardstanding surfaces. Some are fully-serviced, too: just ask for one when you book. For 2018 there are also new luxury pods.
You’ll not go wanting for facilities here, either. In addition to the expected spotless heated amenities block (which offers the added bonus of a laundry room), Longor Wood has a shop, together with picnic benches dotted here and there throughout the campsite, a putting green (don't worry if you've forgotten your clubs - they're available to hire) as well as courts for playing badminton and boules. There's also a dog wash to hose off muddy paws.
Venture further afield, and you’ll find yourself able to explore the village where the TV series Peak Practice was filmed – Longnor – as well as visiting such world-famous attractions as Chatsworth House, Dovedale, the Blue John Mines and Poole’s Cavern. If you’re a fan of markets, you can shop 'til you drop every day except Friday and Sunday at venues in Buxton, Bakewell, Leek and Ashbourne, while bigger towns such as Sheffield, Macclesfield and Chesterfield are all within easy striking distance.
The main attraction here, though, is the Peak District itself, which offers acre upon acre of some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, whether you’re exploring from the comfort of your car, or from the altogether healthier option of the saddle or walking boot. Get bored of the scenery hereabouts, and it’s time to start worrying.
