Camping In The 1920s
Camping equipment has changed massively in the last 90 years - with modern technology making everything from pegs to flysheets much lighter and stronger.
Batteries and electric hook-ups mean it's no longer necessary to heat and light your tent with open flames. Cooking and food storage is so much easier with gas stoves and insulated cool-boxes. And sewn-in groundsheets keep the elements at bay - as well as creepy-crawlies!
But while we wouldn't want to give up our 21st Century comforts completely, as these pictures from a camping book published way back in 1928 show, there's something very appealing about stripping away what's unnecessary and getting back to basics.
Once you've looked at these, fast forward to the 1970s for camping in the age of bell-bottoms and sideburns!

This is a tried and test method of cooking over an open fire, using branches you'd find lying around your chosen campsite.

Food storage made easy - sort of!

Make your own camping chair, it's easy. No really, it is.

Nothing like a bit of improvisation

A few different tent styles, some looking more familiar than others...

Some more improvising

And finally... the joy of pegs
