Travelling in two first-generation Volkswagen buses from 1960 and 1963, Muhammad Syahmi and Muthiah Jeyakumaran undertook the trip as part of their “Trip4Trees” environmental initiative, which combines classic vehicle travel with climate awareness and reforestation projects.
Beginning in Malaysia at the end of February, the pair travelled through Thailand before continuing across Europe. Remarkably, despite the age of the vehicles, neither Bulli suffered a breakdown during the 60-day expedition.
Muthiah Jeyakumaran said
It is a very special moment to bring our buses back to the place where they were once built after almost 60 years.
Alongside, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Stefan Mecha, appeared. He described the journey as proof that “the Bulli has been connecting people all over the world for decades".
The visit to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Hanover plant carried special significance, with the site preparing to celebrate 70 years of production in 2026. During their stop, the team toured the factory, where modern models including the Multivan, California and all-electric ID Buzz were made.
