The Lunar Lexon SI has the luxury of an island bed. Island-bed luxury, though, doesn’t always come as light and short as this. How has this been achieved? Look carefully at the shower

Among the plethora of lightweight fixed bed, single-axle caravans on the market, Lunar’s Lexon SI stands out from the crowd for three main reasons.
Firstly, its 1430kg maximum weight makes it among the lightest for its length (7.26m drawbar to tail lights). Secondly, its bedroom is an island layout, so no-one has to climb over another sleeper. Thirdly, its plain upholstery and fine-thread detail in curtains and cushions give it a modern-yet-cosy look that’s really classy and makes it look every inch the £16,000-plus caravan it is.
There’s another distinguishing factor, too. It’s the solid wooden door that divides bedroom from living room – far higher quality than the pleated partition type, and something you might not expect in a caravan as light as this. It’s a clever, space-saving design: The door of the washbasin and toilet room swings across to section off the living area.
The SI’s fixed bed reaches right to the back of the caravan. To achieve a separate shower, the designers have placed it in the bedroom area; the washbasin and toilet room is opposite. Disadvantage? Only one – the compartment for the toilet and basin is small. (But it does manage an excellent array of shelves on the wall, although you’d have to move everything every time you tow.) Advantage? You get a true en-suite arrangement in an island bedroom. And wardrobes on each side of the bed eliminate any discussion about one or the other taking up too much space in a shared wardrobe.
In order to get a permanent bed and separate shower into just 5.79 metres of body, Lunar has shrunk the kitchen. That means surface space and cupboard space is limited. But nothing is limited about the comfort of the lounge. Squashy bolster ends plus two scatter cushions ensure that. It’s not just the physical comfort of the lounge you’ll notice about this Lexon. It’s the bright, light look. The delightful cream carpet helps. You might think it’s too pale to be practical. But, as we discovered during this test when a muddy boot attached to the photographer strayed off the doormat, it’s more durable than it appears. The marks came off immediately with a damp-cloth scrub – that’s because this high quality carpet is designed to be durable.
Upholstery is a warm, light brown, relying on its prominent weave for its pattern interest. The detail that distinguishes this model is in the curtains and cushions which have threads of turquoise and dark brown running through plain, shiny fabric.
Another of this caravan’s defining features is its large drinks cabinet, above the dresser alongside the door. Its double doors are plastic, with the centre tinted dark brown and the surround a gold colour, adding to the classic look.
Specification extends to an external shower connection point – ideal for washing the dog or muddy boots. More important is the in-built alarm system and outside locker with mains socket within – and there’s something in the spec list that perhaps you wouldn’t expect. It’s a super-pitch water connection point. It’s a nice touch of luxury for when you’re on luxury sites. One example of detail that distinguishes Lexons is the curtain fabric, high quality, pencil-pleated so that they fold perfectly.
 

The value in the Lunar Lexon SI, – in addition to the quality – is in the weight and the layout: it’s a lightweight island-bed caravan that’s 2.28m wide and only 5.79 metres in body length. You have enough spec to satisfy most needs but not enough to tip the price and weight scales into high territory. Above all, the Lexon SI gives you the cosiness of a fixed bed in a short length with a luxury look that makes it appear it might have cost you more than it did.
