INTRODUCING the Clubman range for 2009, and a fixed bed caravan on a single axle. Lunar could have a winner with this one.

The 2009 range has been given a boost by tweaks on the capable 2008 model year.

Launched in November 1974, 34 years ago and just five years after Lunar’s entrance into a crowded market, the Clubman range was a success from day one.

All the different components of the Clubman SI add up to an all-round good quality caravan.

Our SI has an island bed on a single axle. It’s a smart move by Lunar to get owners of smaller cars interested in the Clubman range.

The exterior looks cool with its graphics and brilliant white finish. The profile might not be as exciting as some previous Clubmans, but the 2009 model looks attractive and comes with alloy wheels, exterior mains socket, BBQ point, AKS hitch and AL-KO ATC as standard.

Its only drawback are the ribbed side panels which now look a little dated. Smooth sidewalls would be preferable and would really make this Lunar stand out – who knows, we might get our wish for 2010.

Step inside the Clubman SI and you’ll find the lovely furniture finish that you’ve come to expect from the Lunar factory. The quality panels on the roof lockers and neatly fitting drawers give you confidence that the Lunar was built with care.

The dark wood finish enhances the quality of the furniture design without looking old fashioned.

Soft furnishings are modern in design and sturdy in quality, so they should be ripe for many years of service. Seating is sprung and comfortable. The beige carpet might be the only give-away to its usage – it’ll show the marks – but you can’t dispute its quality.

Lunar clubman caravan interior image The front dinette will comfortably seat four people and possibly an extra two at a squeeze. Roof locker storage includes three over the front window alone, as well as two either side; they are deep in design. The area is well lit by spotlights and two mains units.

The side kitchen has a full oven and large fridge/freezer. The hob now has one electric plate and three gas burners. Downlighters are impressive; the light radiates across the kitchen top so there’s no shaded area.

The roof lockers house a rather snazzy chrome-effect microwave. This area is a little lacking in worktop, but for what there is, the solid feel of the worktop and the finish is a treat.

Opposite, the side dresser supplies more worktop space or somewhere to sit your TV. The heater controls are here for easy access and the Truma heater is at the dresser’s base.

The washroom sits along the side and is split across the two halves of the SI, with the shower cubicle on the left and the hand basin and loo on the right.

The shower has three moulded shelves and a ceiling lamp. This room has the latest Thetford loo with electric flush, small hand basin and a storage cupboard beneath. A side window gives added ventilation and daylight.

The rear island bed has a gas-assisted strut that easily lifts to give access to the storage area beneath. There’s ample space around the bed for walking and two side windows break up the sidewalls to give an airy feel and a light interior.

There are two wardrobes – one on each side of the bed – and three lockers above so there’s plenty of storage. If there’s one niggle, it’s that the shelves on either side are a little high for reaching up to your morning cuppa.

Verdict:

Lunar’s 2009 caravans are bound to woo couples who don’t want to be forced into owning a hulking 4x4 to tow this single-axle tourer.

The Clubman SI continues Lunar’s tradition of quality which has retained many followers over the years and is sure to attract a few more with this incarnation.

The smart, yet not over the top, exterior design, and the general feeling of quality is very appealing to me. There’s no escaping that it offers good value for money in this price bracket too.
