Twin-axle stability, three bunks, long settees at the front that make more singles or a double – and a sixth bed in a family area at the rear... The new-layout for 2010 Xplore 596 that now takes on the Elddis brand is a great family caravan.
It’s the rear section that makes it such a winner. A two-seater (at least) settee runs from the bunk stack to the offside. A third seat faces it across a table. There’s a television aerial socket and mains power point on the wall just by the rear-facing single seat. And you have two choices of position for your television in this rear area – you can use the dining table that clips to the wall or a small shelf that hinges down over the single seat, near to the sockets.
The two lower bunks both lift up to give you an enormous storage opportunity. A very practical arrangement.
The kitchen ticks more practicality boxes. There’s surface space to the left of the three-burner hob. A large cupboard area gives you ample space for tall items.
Xplores are designed to appeal to young families with modern tastes. This year’s range fulfils that aim even better than any since the Xplore was launched, with a colour scheme that’s a class leader. That’s because of the prominent use of a rich terracotta colour. It appears in bold circles on the seat backs and in solid form on the scatter cushions; it also edges the curtain bands. The base colour is a warm cream tone. The curtains are fawn. The whole effect? Crisp, modern and delightful.
The carpet is a simple strip. Call it an economy measure to depart from furniture-contour-fitted carpet if you wish – but the practicality score is high here, because a single strip is easy to roll up and stash under a bedding locker when there’s a risk of muddy feet making their mark on it. The wood grain-effect flooring that it exposes is attractive, too.
The shower shares the washroom with the loo; a curtain keeps water off the loo and door. Usefully, previously – there’s a rail running the length of the washroom. It’s perfect for drying towels and garments.
Comfort and space is excellent, giving the big Xplore an appeal far above its price station. Storage is good, too: a total of 13 head lockers. But it’s the wardrobe that really excels when you come to look at storage in this model. it’s a double-doored unit, with ample hanging space plus a large, three-shelf unit. Beneath the shelves is a cavernous shoe cupboard. Enough storage space for six? This is one of a very few caravans about which you can truly say you have plenty of clothes storage space for six people.
Anything missing? A hitch head stabiliser is an optional extra (£239). And you’ll have to budget for a spare wheel and carrier (£109).

Our Verdict
The 2010 Elddis Xplore 596 is a practical family caravan that gives truly enough space for six to eat, sleep, make meals, shower, lounge about and store their equipment without a problem. With this model, unlike smaller six-berths, you can holiday happily without the need for an awning. And that’s a real bonus, especially when you consider you get all this for £13,495
