Coachman Amara Crown 570/6 caravan
When offered a caravan with £900 of extras at almost £2000 less than the price of a standard model, you’d be tempted, we’d guess.
The Coachman Amara 570/6 is well-equipped to begin with but his special-edition Amara Crown, from Marquis Caravans, adds even more.
Here are the sums: a standard Coachman Amara 570/6 costs £17,360. Add on Marquis Caravans’ normal £495 dealer delivery charge and you get £17,895. Then three pieces of extra equipment turn it into an Amara Crown; an alarm system which would cost £300 as an extra; the entertainment system is the same as the one you’d find in a Pastiche, the next model up; and the soft furnishings are a unique pattern that would cost you an additional £250.
The alarm system is operated by a car-style key fob, which arms an infra-red sensor (PIR). The entertainment equipment upgrade gives you a DVD playback facility and satellite points.
The Crown versions of the Amara models weigh exactly the same as their standard equivalents – because the alarm, sound system upgrade and fabric changes don’t add weight.
Marquis Caravans has created Crown versions of six of the Amara’s nine models. There are two four berths, two six-berths and a two-berth. Our test example of the range, the single-axle six-berth 570/6, was loaned to Go Caravan by the Marquis Preston branch; Crowns are also sold at the Northampton head office.
The 570 is a family layout that has fast become a standard – it has a children’s area at the rear and a central washroom with a separate shower. The kids’ zone provides sleeping for four: twin fixed bunks, each with plenty of headroom, plus a single bed made from the nearside table seating area, with a bunk rising above it, mounted to the wall.
There’s a two-shelf cupboard between the bunks and the rear settee – with a mains socket, TV and satellite points hidden inside.
Under the lower bunk is a large storage area. The base rises on big tough hinges, bringing with it the wooden front section of the bunk base, so access to this area is really easy. Two wooden, clip-in guards are provided for each bunk to stop anyone falling out of bed.
The top bunk has its own window. The lower one doesn’t – but this is a bright area anyway, thanks to windows to the side and rear.
There are two useful book pockets on the side of the top bunk, made of fabric that matches the rest of the upholstery.
Standard specification includes an Omnivent extractor fan and microwave. Importantly, all heights of people are catered for in the washroom – there are two mirrors, one directly above the basin and one much higher.
The 570 seems spacious for its length, especially in the kids’ area, where the two-seater table creates more floor space than the wedge-shaped three- and four-seaters that you’ll sometimes find in caravans with this layout.
Our Verdict
The Amara-based Coachman Crown 570/6’s package is one of the best dealer specials around – at less than the price of the standard caravan and with three upgrades plus delivery charge thrown in. Amaras, even though they’re Coachman’s lowest priced range, are far from basic caravans. When you add in extra equipment and then take a big slice off the price, the Amara Crowns stand up in the crowd.
