Whereas triple bunks were the caravan trend of 2009 and 2010, the 2011 fashion for rear family bedrooms/playrooms has become two fixed bunks, plus two more making from the dining furniture opposite.
Swift has created this new layout in the Sterling Europa 570, for example – and Coachman has now redesigned its best-selling six-berth to create two, rather than three, bunks in a stack on the offside. In doing so, Coachman has transformed the 570/6 from a caravan for very young children to a model that will suit a family as the kids grow; specifically, as they need more head room in their bunks.
Both the Europa 570 and the Amara 570 have nearside tables which clip to the wall above the folded bunk which rises up above the seating. Whereas the Europa’s nearside table sits slightly too high for dining (even for those of adult height), the Amara’s table is lower – perfect for comfortable elbow and wrist angle for knives-and-forks use.
The lower fixed bunk assembly rises smoothly on gas-filled struts to lie against the wall. No clips or other fixing – it just stays there, pressed firmly against the wall by the struts. This creates a tall storage area that’s easy to access.
The Amara’s designers have thought out the connectivity needs of families. Between the rear settee and the lower bunk is a cabinet with an aperture in the side through which you can reach to insert a mains plug to the socket. TV points are here, too – all out of the way, without the need for trailing wires.
One of this model’s great assets is that its front settees are full adult-sleeping length. That means this is a dining area for six (if four are small).
