Carlight Commander 182

Carlight Caravans offer hand-built, craftsman appeal. Commander models for 2011 and 2012 are much more modern in style than those produced in the 1990s

The three-berth Carlight Commander 182 has a side dining area and end washroom. Its kitchen has a Dometic 115-litre fridge and Thetford Caprice Mk III oven and grill with four-burner hob.
But there the similarity with other caravans of this popular layout ends. For the Carlight stamp of traditional cabinet making methods is evident everywhere. Doors have piano hinges. The double bed that makes up in the lounge is of unique construction. The nearside settee base moves across the caravan to meet up with the one on the offside, leaving a small corridor alongside the nearside. The upholstery is flat, with no knee rolls, so there is no need to turn the sections over to achieve a flat mattress. The backrests that, in daytime mode, are held at an angle by wooden supports for extra comfort, fold flat against the walls by night.
The kitchen is large, with surfaces on each side of the central cooker. The sink and drainer covers fold back on piano hinges.
More distinguishing features are in the full-width washroom. The shower and toilet are on the offside. A wardrobe suite occupies the nearside of the little room, with two drawers beneath it – and a seat that pulls out from above the drawers. It’s somewhere to sit to dry hair and apply make-up.
The door that closes off the shower-toilet compartment swings forward to segment the whole grooming room from the rest of the caravan. 
Carlight construction is traditional timber frame, foam insulation. And Carlight tells us that each Commander model for 2012 will be about 100kg lighter than those produced in the 1990s.
