Eight-foot width, a king-size bed, stunning lighting designs and a large kitchen surface area; the Sintra has definite broad appeal.

As luxury levels grow, sometimes, so do caravan names… Bailey’s flagship range has now added  ‘Deluxe’ to its name, suggesting a new level of luxury. As well as a longer name, two new models arrive for 2025. These are the single-axle Sintra and the twin-axle Alvor. 

And, you’ve guessed it, both are named after gorgeous places in Portugal, as is the rest of the range. Alvor is a spectacular resort of quiet quality on the coast of the Algarve; Sintra is an opulent place of palaces, mansions and spectacular villas. 

Do these new eight-foot-wide models live up to their namesakes that have reputations for stunning vistas? Our review of the Sintra would establish that pretty quickly.

This model was unveiled to the public at the Great Caravan, Motorhome and Holiday Home Show, just before this issue went to press, and we grabbed the opportunity in between the public show and the trade days to spend quality time in the Sintra.

The layout

First, the layout. It has a transverse island bed and a rear shower room. The kitchen is L-shaped; the lounge has parallel seating. 

Now for the details. First to get your attention will surely be the bed – it’s king-size, at 1.5m wide (and has a pocket-sprung mattress). That’s surely deluxe.

The kitchen

The L-shape of the kitchen gives you a huge surface, especially with the flush-fitting sink cover in place and the hob top down. 

The surface measures 1.25m long and the section that juts out on the fore end is 36cm wide and a metre deep. It’s finished in a stunning brown marble effect, with white veins. 

The splashback has a matching finish; starkly smart and all very deluxe.

The forward edge of the kitchen surface has a 6cm raised section that, from a practical point of view, prevents anything from spilling onto the lounge upholstery and, from a design perspective, forms a  clear demarcation between the lounge and the kitchen, making the lounge feel just a little bit like a room on its own. 

The fridge is the tall, slimline Thetford 137-litre unit with a 15-litre freezer compartment, and there is a locker beneath it. 

The tap has a flexible arch that enables you to swish it from side to side when rinsing; very high-end domestic in style – and very practical. Deluxe? Yes.

Kitchen storage

The main kitchen storage area is two 36cm-wide drawers, both with soft-close mechanisms, and a drop-down-door locker, plus a locker that’s perfect for pans under the oven. 

On the fore end of the kitchen a curved door opens to reveal two metal basket-style drawers that slide out on a runner, plus three fixed shelves. All of the lockers have concealed roll catches, including the two top lockers alongside the microwave.

Alongside the door are two shelves recessed into a simple and stylishly designed unit, with a shelf above that could accommodate a television – that’s if you didn’t want to attach it to the bracket on the wall above.

The lounge

The lounge bears more than a passing resemblance to the new Bailey Unicorn Deluxe range. (The big distinction between the two is that the Unicorns retain standard 2.26m width whereas Alicantos are full-fat 2.45m wide.)

The armrests are, like those in the Unicorns, cylindrical. And, also like the Unicorns, the side windows have voiles and panels; this time in a beautiful subtle floral pattern in pale chocolate shade with silvery pattern outlines. 

The bedroom 

The same fabric is used for the Roman-styled blind in the bedroom. It’s not only the king-size bed that impressed us here. 

Lighting runs along each side of the deep mirror above the dressing table and here is, as far as we know, a unique-in-caravans dressing table top. It lifts to reveal two compartments clearly designed so that you can organise make-up here. Below is a double-doored cabinet. We like the style of the bedhead, curving slightly forward on each side of the bedroom; again adding to the deluxe look.

Bedroom storage

The wardrobe has the deluxe touch, in the form of a light that comes on automatically, not, as you might expect, in response to the door being opened; rather, it senses movement.

The rail gives you 50cm of hanging with. There are three corner shelves ideal for small items and two large shelf spaces ideal for footwear. It’s a capacious and well-designed wardrobe.

Two large lockers and four shelves are above the bed, and bedside cabinets each have three drawers. Bedroom storage, thus, is more than adequate – and that’s before you’ve factored in the space under the bed. 

The washroom

In the shower room the deluxe elements are about lighting and shelving. Light is concealed, unusually, within a shelf under the cabinet that sits beneath the washbasin. 

Lighting is also concealed behind the large oval mirror. And in the shower cubicle, there’s an illuminated panel with a leaf-and-berry design outlined in black. The Alicanto Grande Deluxe line-up now comprises the pre-existing Porto and Evora, plus these two new models.

Oozing deluxe elements and with a practical kitchen that has lots of surface space, this single-axle tourer has bags of appeal. 

We love the king-size bed and also the super deluxe ambience of the bedroom. We love the lighting design in the shower room, too.  And, of course we love the extra space that comes along with eight-foot width.
