THE exterior of this caravan is discernably Avondale with the rather upright front panel which reminds us that the manufacturer tucks its gas cylinders away in a side access locker so they don’t have any significant effect on noseweight.
The interior layout merits only a few words. It is a conventional double settee/double bed front with the heavy kitchen and sideboard over the axle and a rear washroom comprising shower, washbasin, toilet and shelves and wardrobe arrangement.
That is what everybody else does, and it works, so why be different just for the sake of it? The clue that Avondale have made some significant changes starts from when you step inside the Avocet.
Facing you is an essential at this specification level of caravan - a microwave oven. We’ve long complained about inadequate lighting over caravan stoves. The combination of a dark cooker, liquids bubbling over a naked flame and inadequate lighting has always seemed to us to be a formula for disaster.
Avondale haven’t fitted a light over the hob, but at least they’ve done the next best thing. A long fluorescent tube extends up to the edge of the hob so the cooker is no longer in a black hole.
Unless we went back to the old cubby-hole washroom and wardrobe, it is difficult to see how any manufacturer can gain any more kitchen storage area than the Avocet offers. At least the sideboard opposite has been sensibly designed to provide as much usable space as possible.
Caravan salesmen will tell you that providing the layout, specification and price suits, what sells a caravan is the subtle interplay between soft furnishing colours and textures and the co-ordination of the various fabrics.
The trade don’t call this the ‘wow factor’ because consumers rarely buy caravans which make them say ‘wow’. If a dealer wants to sell a caravan, the prospective buyer needs to relax, to feel comfortable.
The seating fabrics are a subtle combination of cream, light brown and grey with the curtains a mid brown with tie-backs showing the same patterning you see on the seats.
You’ll even find the same tie-back fabric used as a backing for the front-mounted lights and as a surround to the three-quarter length mirror.
To add to the general feeling of quality, the furniture veneer is a slightly dark shade of brown than some of the opposition but with a slightly more pronounced wood grain effect. The combination gives a harmonised effect which is going to be loved by all and not hated by anybody.
