THE DUB-BOX

The main business of Premier Mobiles is the manufacture of luxury portable toilets, working from an old WW2 aerodrome near Leominster. These aren’t the bog-standard, utility loos that you will find at most public events, but super-loos, luxuriously fitted out to the highest standards. So how was it that business owner, Matt Clay, come to be among the exhibitors at the NEC Show in October?

I first caught a glimpse of these first two finished caravans in October, but under the rather dour lighting of the NEC. A few weeks later I was given the chance to take a look at them in more detail, this time in an environment that showed them off in the setting they deserve.

Mart says
The Dub Box looks remarkably like the original VW on which it is based, with Perspex windows and a front locker for gas bottles and other smaller items. Four corner steadies are employed, along with the conventional running gear and galvanized chassis.
The standard version is a fixed roof model, which obviously helps to keep the price down. An elevating roof version is available for those who are prepared to pay the extra cost, but many people have said that they would be quite happy to use it as it is.

The Dub Box isn’t intended to be a caravan in the conventional sense, but provides the essential facilities that are totally in keeping with the spirit of the traditional VW campervan. It means that two couples can now set off in a single vehicle, with secure storage for surfboards and plenty of room for extra luggage that you previously had to leave behind.

The interior sports a front lounge area with wrap-around seating, which allows Matt and the family to eat their eat meals in comfort. At night, the dinette makes into a full-width double bed. Only one ceiling lamp is fitted for night use, although corner spots can be added. There is a small wardrobe and additional storage is available under the seats and in a side cupboard and a dresser, which has a built-in radio/cd player. Kitchen facilities are accessible via the rear door.

The price of the Dub Box reflects the craftsmanship that goes into building it, but you can buy just the chassis and naked body shell if you would like to tackle the job yourself. The factory finished versions can be colour matched to your vehicle and you can also choose your own interior colour scheme.
