Full Review

Over a decade since it last produced a high-top van conversion, Grimsby-based Auto-Trail this year is producing a three model range: the original front lounge 600, the transverse fixed bed 620 and our test vehicle, the rear lounge 610.

They are all based on  Fiat’s just-under-six-metre panel van, although Auto-trail’s own GRP high roof removes a chunk of steel from the Ducato, replacing it with reinforced plastic. This allows for more interior headroom and a flat floor throughout.

This flat floor includes a shallow double floor that still manages to house pipes, ducts and cabling.

At the back, a rear-door replacing panel gives access to a shallow stowage area. But there is also a great zipped nest in the boot lid for the optional two outdoor chairs (great idea) and shallow storage that extends under the lounge, thanks again to that double floor.

Power is more than adequate with the standard 130-horsepower motor, but tall drivers might not get the seat far enough back for comfortable piloting. So do try before you buy.

The washroom offers limited space to stand at the basin, thanks to Auto-Trail’s insistence on providing a separate shower. The shower is good, however, with the double floor allowing enough space for a practical lowered tray.

The kitchen is simple, smart and nicely equipped: two lids lift to reveal a glass-topped hob/sink with a decent oven below.? Opposite, the drawer-style fridge is easy to get into, although not exactly spacious.

Bedtime is also an easy time: two singles are created by just removing the backrest cushions, or a big double is an option once you’ve pulled the sofas together.

Our Verdict

One of the best rear lounge high-top campervans on the market. Only the rather tight bathroom loses it marks.

Advantages
Raised roof is a bonus
Raised roof is a bonus
Double floor hides ducting

Disadvantages

Not much space to wash
Shallow boot
