Regular readers of Campervan will know that we do like an Auto Campers, so we thought we’d better share the company’s Day Van with you, because it is pretty unusual…

Auto Campers takes a unique approach to how it designs campervans, and the myriad options it provides its customers with. The premise is that everyone is different.

We all have our needs and wants out of a camper and it’s nice to be able to personalise it, too. Of course, budget is a deciding factor for many buyers, so allowing you to essentially build your own bespoke campervan, just like you might build your own Domino’s pizza by selecting what you want from the menu, provides people with plenty of flexibility.

In earlier issues of the magazine, we’ve looked at the company’s MRV – an über-versatile campervan that suits those who might have specific work needs, or a disability, primarily due to its removable seats and floor rail system, and a clever floating bed.

We also took the Eco-line for a road test and fell in love with its go-faster stripes, but what really appeals is that it’s available on a used base vehicle, and one could be yours for under £30k.

Then we looked at the Leisure Van, which seems quite traditional with its side kitchen layout and rock ‘n’ roll-style bed, until you spot things like twin sliding doors, providing access to the kitchen unit from outside.

Perhaps we’ve saved the best until last, though, as the Day Van Modular Series combines elements that we’ve loved from all the other Auto Campers models.

A real feature is its modular design, which means you can take all the furniture out and store it in the garage, for example. That’s ideal if your campervan also serves other purposes and you frequently need access to the load space that a van provides without all the campervan elements in it.

A track system bonded to the floor is something you’ll notice in all Auto Campers models, and here, there are six rails. This system means you can add seats and create up to a seven-seater vehicle, if you wish.

As they sit in the rails, they can be slid back and forth as you please, too. One especially nifty feature is that the floating bench/bed system will unfurl over the top of two rear passenger seats – just push the backs of these forwards into a flat position, and hey presto!

That means you could have a six-seater campervan and not have to worry about what you’re going to do with all those seats when you get to the campsite. The floor rails can also be used for attaching various sorts of racks and anchors, which is handy if you want to transport things like bikes, wheelchairs, or dog cages.

The removable kitchen pod can be used either inside or out, and it features a fridge, and a sink fed from a water container below. Note that there’s no gas here, so you might want to get a camping stove.

However, the utility module – a bank of cupboards and shelves for storing clothes and camping gear – is available with an optional microwave.

As with other Auto Campers models, the Day Van can be ordered on a VW T6.1 or Ford Transit Custom base. The Ford has proven by far the most popular option, and it’s available in all its guises.

Choose from short or long-wheelbase, manual or automatic gearbox, and a variety of engine outputs. Out of the factory, the Ford Transit Custom is available with a Lo-Line roof (regular van height), or High-Line (high-top). In addition, Auto Campers offers a pop-top roof, which provides a four-berth camper.

The Auto Campers lowdown

Auto Campers began in 2011 and the campervans were built by independent Ford specialist, Roy Wood Transits, in Reading. It has a heritage going back over 50 years representing various campervan and motorhome manufacturers, and has a wealth of engineering knowledge, including Motability accreditation and type approval work with Manchester University.

In 2014, a partnership was formed between Firth Campers and Roy Wood Transits, with production increasing and moving to Sheffield. In Scotland, you can also try before you buy with Highland Auto Campers, and get a £500 rebate on your campervan if you go on to buy.
