Willerby Winchester - Pleasure to behold

2b486f98-3d86-40fc-9975-25863d637dc8
AVAILABLE with either two or three bedroom, and with optional French doors, the Winchester is a 38ft x 12ft 6in BS EN1647 single unit.

Externally, the home sits on a gal-vanised twin axle chassis and is alumin-ium clad with white PVCu double glazed windows and doors. Gas central heating with thermostatically con-trolled radiators in the lounge is standard.

The model I saw was the two bedroom home with the Outlook French doors, sleeping six thanks to the sofa bed in the lounge.

Kitchen and diner

The entrance midway along the front side elevation leads directly into the kitchen, with the diner opposite. The kitchen is small, basically U shaped and, like the rest of the home, features dark fascias as well as dark fawn wall covering. Personally, I prefer holiday homes to be light and airy, but others may disagree.

On the right as you enter is an integrated fridge/freezer followed by a unit containing a microwave. Next is a wall cupboard and below it a base unit and worktop with a double cupboard and four drawers.

Left of the entrance is a unit with 11/2 sink and cupboards below. At right-angles, along the party wall with the lounge, is a combination gas oven with a four burner hob and grill, with extractor above. Behind the hob is a glass splashback – there being no tiling to the walls. Either side of the extractor hood is a single wall cupboard.

At 90 degrees to the oven is a base unit with a worktop projecting beyond the unit to form a short breakfast bar with semi-circular end. Lighting in the kitchen comprised ceiling downlights plus lights in the extractor and below the cupboard housing the microwave.

The dining area has a freestanding rectangular table and four high back padded chairs, above which an attractive triple pendant ceiling light hangs from the vaulted ceiling. The floor both here and in the kitchen is stone tile effect vinyl.

Lounge

What I liked very much about this home was the separate lounge accessed from the kitchen/dining area (though an open plan versiion is also available). It is rectangular and in the model I saw had the optional French doors in the end wall.

Furniture comprises a two-seat sofa bed, two armchairs and a nest of tables. In one corner is a TV table and an electric fire mounted on a dark wood effect panel fitted on the home’s back wall. Above the fire are two lit display recesses. There is also a freestanding display cabinet on the party wall with the kitchen.

A pendant with five lights is suspended from the vaulted ceiling and, in addition to the French doors, there are windows in the three walls. Despite this, the dark wood effect panels made the room far less light and airy than I would have liked.

Bedrooms

Across the hall from the bathroom is the second bedroom. This has two good- size divan beds with a bedside cabinet between them and cupboards and shelves above the headboards.

On the underside of the cupboards are reading lights, while opposite the foot of the divan on the outside wall is a small wardrobe with three drawers below it and a TV point facing the beds. There is also a large mirror on a panel above the room’s radiator.

At the end of the corridor is the main bedroom, which spans the full width of the home. It has a king-size bed with lift up storage, and some very attractive cupboards with concealed lighting above the headboard.
Either side of the bed is a wall-mounted bedside cabinet and, on the outside wall adjacent to the head of the bed, a small window seat, next to which is a dressing table and stool. Above the dressing table is a large mirror and two LED downlights. Adjoining the dressing table is a single door wardrobe.

On the opposite wall, facing the dress-ing table, is a pair of double door ward-robes with framed mirror doors and high level concealed lighting, while below each wardrobe are three drawers, ensuring that there is plenty of storage for clothes.

Next to the wardrobes is a folding door leading into an en suite toilet. Bearing in mind size of the home, this is small, with room only for the toilet and a corner-mounted pedestal washbasin. There is a mirror on a panel above the washbasin and, above the toilet, a unit containing three shelves, but apart from these there is no other storage in the en suit.

Bath and shower

From the kitchen a door leads into the hallway. Immediately on the left is the bathroom, which has a 3⁄4 bath with a thermostatically controlled shower above the taps. The area around the bath has plank tiling and next to the shower screen on the outside edge is a tall unit with open shelves and a cupboard for toiletry storage.

Facing the bath is a circular washbasin fitted on top of a shelf. Above it is a large mirror surmounted by a twin light unit. Next to the washbasin is the toilet, which has a concealed cistern in a tall unit also housing the home’s boiler.

OUR VERDICT

There’s no doubting the build quality of the Winchester. My main criticism is purely personal: I did not like the dark wood effect finish and dark fawn wall covering, which made the home feel rather claustrophobic to me.

What I did like was the well-equipped kitchen – including the dedicated space for a microwave. Without it, the microwave would have to sit on the worktop – which, as the kitchen is fairly small, would take up valuable workspace. The dining furniture, too, was well above what might have been expected in a home costing less than £34,000.

The main bedroom was a real pleasure to behold. Big enough for a king size bed, with loads of storage for clothes, and I liked the window seat and dressing table. For your money you also get double glazing and central heating with thermostatic radiators.
