Willerby Solara Gold - Sure to be a favourite

WILLERBY' new Solara Gold two bed is built to EN1647 and comes with a five year struc-tural warranty and a three year parts warranty. In all there are six single unit models from the 26ft x 10ft two bed to the 35ft x 10ft three bed model. I saw the 28ft x 10ft two bed home with an ex works price of £17,371 (including VAT at 17.5 per cent, though remember that this rate will be rising in January)

The home has a 4in painted steel chassis, is aluminium clad with a steel pantile roof and single glazed steel grey windows. Options here include a 5in pre-galvanised chassis – worth considering if the home is to be sited near the sea – PVCu gutters and down pipes instead of aluminium, and an environmental green exterior.

The front end has a large bay, with three window panels.

LOUNGE AND DINER

The dining area is against the partition wall between the second bedroom and the living area. It has L-shaped bench seating plus two stools and a triangular table which, though suitable for four people, may be less so for six.

The lounge area also has L-shaped bench seats – one of which can become a sofa bed – running along the wall from the end of the kitchen and across the front wall below the first two windows of the bay. Beyond the seat is a short gap to the corner where a TV/AV unit has been fitted. Next to this unit is chimney breast housing a gas fire.

During the day the whole area is light and airy thanks to the bay windows plus three others in the home’s front and rear walls, but I suspect that at night extra freestanding lighting may be needed to supplement the single lights in the ceiling in each of the lounge, dining and kitchen areas.

KITCHEN

The kitchen, left of the entrance, com-prises base and wall cupboards against the front wall of the home, running in a straight line towards the lounge area. A wall cupboard immediately to the left of the doorway houses the boiler.

In addition to a combined oven and grill there are dedicated housings for a microwave above the worktop and an under-shelf fridge below it. Behind the hob is a small splashback about 6in high and above it, an overhead extractor. As the splashback isn’t very high I was slightly concerned that the wall will tend become grubby due to rising fumes and grease unless it is cleaned regularly. My other concern is that the single light in the vaulted ceiling may not be sufficient when cooking at night.

SHOWER ROOM

Immediately on the right as you enter the home – the door is about 2/3 along the front side elevation – is the shower room; to the left, the kitchen.

In the shower room the toilet has been fitted in the corner at 45 degrees. Nearby is the washbasin mounted on a cupboard with doors at right-angles to each other.

Then comes the fibreglass rectangular shower cubicle. This doesn’t take up the full depth of the room – the space between  the shower and the party wall with the corridor has been fitted with a series of shelves.

A further advantage of the shower room is the heated towel rail, which helps to make this room one of the Solara’s best features.

MASTER BEDROOM

Next door to the shower room is the main bedroom. This has a double bed with a timber headboard incorporating a small bedside unit at each side of the bed. On the wall above the bed is a shelf unit.

On the wall opposite the foot of the bed is a small shelf next to a wardrobe.with three doors. Above the shelf is a framed mirror and a 13 amp socket and shaver point.

SECOND BEDROOM

Opposite the kitchen, with its door at an angle, is the second bedroom. This is fairly small room, housing two narrow divan beds with only a small gap between them. Like the main bedroom, the beds have a single headboard with a shelf unit above them.

Opposite the foot of the bed, on the outside wall, is a small wardrobe and next to it a framed mirror together with a single 13 amp socket and a plinth heater switch.

Though the room is small I felt that as this is a holiday home, it provides adequate sleeping accommodation.

With an ex works price of £17,371, the 28ft x 10ft Solara is an entry level holiday home that I reckon represents good value for money. Externally it looks very much like many other aluminium clad holiday homes and so will obviously find favour with the managements on holiday parks who are looking for a degree of uniformity.

Internally, it is adequately equipped for the holiday needs of a family of four – or six if the sofa bed in the lounge is used. Adequate is also the word we’d use to describe the kitchen, though if the home were ours we’d seriously think about adding a full splashback reaching from the hob to the extractor. Nor would an optional microwave and under- worktop fridge break the bank.
