Willerby Castleton: Practicalities and lots of surprises

The Castleton is a 38ft x 12ft unit available with either two or three-bedrooms. It’s Willerby’s latest holiday home, and was designed with input from members of the Willerby Owners’ Club, who chose the front window design from a number of drawings.

The result of members’ choice is an imposing entrance; a door recessed alongside a box bay window, with floor-to-ceiling windows at both the front and side of the corners. Options enable buyers to choose to have one, or both, of these windows as opening doors.

I could have stepped into the Castleton through one of these doors, straight into the lounge (our review Castleton is equipped with both door options). I entered, though, via the Castleton’s spacious hallway, and discover one of many surprises about this home. Instantly, I get the message that it’s not just the front elevation that sets the Castleton apart from the majority. In most holiday homes, you step straight into the kitchen from the side door. Here, you step into a hallway, with the practicalities of coat hooks, a seat on which to perch to unlace boots, plus shoe racks under the seat. There’s even a mirror; you can straighten your hair, perhaps, before going into the dining area!

And here is another surprise. It’s a cosy dining alcove, with a settee, three big, circular stools and a corner shelf arrangement with connection points to enable you to charge iPads and other devices. You could even put a small TV here; this is definitely a family pursuits area when it’s not in dining mode.

The kitchen is opposite, almost U-shaped, with a four-burner hob, oven and grill above that has a curved glass extractor hood.
A four-bottle wine rack sits above the microwave; very neat! Standard equipment includes all of this plus a fridge-freezer. There’s space for a dishwasher or washing machine (these are optional extras) and plenty of storage space in the cabinets. The Deluxe Options Pack available also includes speakers set into the lounge ceiling, upgraded mattresses, plus bedding sets.

A splash of colour catches the eye but doesn’t dominate the décor; the hob splash-back is a lovely, sunny mustard yellow; it’s a colour theme that carries on throughout the Castleton. In the lounge, the sunny colour appears in a subtler shade, mid greys and whites, in a horizontal pattern in the curtains and some of the cushions.

While the lounge integrates with the kitchen, it’s also quite a separate entity and, considering the Castleton, at 12 feet wide, is among the smaller holiday homes (which points to its affordability), the lounge feels nicely spacious.

L shaped seating, upholstered in soft grey, accommodates plenty of people and also folds out to create a sofa bed.

The Castleton has lots of surprises – the hallway and dining alcove aren’t the only ones; in the corner of the seating unit is a hidden storage space. You just remove a cushion to reveal a place for games and books and other stuff.

Opposite the seating is an angled entertainment wall. A TV is an option for here. There’s log-effect fire below the TV position, plus a cabinet alongside.

The Castleton chalks up lots of firsts for Willerby: It’s the first 12ft holiday home to have a bath as an option. It’s also the first to have three-feet-wide twin beds in the second bedroom and an en suite shower to the main bedroom. All of the other homes with these features are wider.

If you go for a standard Castleton, you get a shower in the family bathroom, plus a tall cabinet alongside it. If you go for the option of the bath, you get an over-bath shower; that’s fitted in our review unit and it’s a super bathroom. This shower, plus the one in the en suite, has a mechanism which enables you to alter the flow rate, by swiveling a small lever on the rose; that’s another Castleton special feature.

The second bedroom is equipped with a well designed entertainment area for television and games connectivity; a TV is an option.

The master bedroom is impressively appointed, with a king-sized bed, and touch-control lights beside the bed, plus USB charging points. Capacious storage cupboards are above the bed. There’s a large wardrobe and a make-up table, too.

The Castleton is a mid-range family holiday home in terms of price, and has a lot of practical features as well as many stylish elements.
