Holiday park review: Bay View in Cumbria

A shoreline vista — Wide-open coastal views, a character restaurant complex and a beautiful, tranquil location — Bay View has all of this and more besides.

Words by Val Chapman

Bordering the vast, grassed foreshores of Morecambe Bay is a spacious holiday park with an irresistibly natural aspect. Many of the holiday homes are on the edge of the green sward — and far beyond, the Irish Sea.

This vista of tranquillity simply invites you to relax and unwind. The only sounds are birdsong and the rippling of foreshore grass in the breeze.

Bay View Holiday Park is the southernmost park in the Holgates group of holiday home parks around Morecambe Bay. Silverdale, Silver Ridge at Hale near Milnthorpe, Netherbeck near Carnforth and Far Arnside, plus the newest park in the group, The Cove, straddle the border of Cumbria and Lancashire. Rimington Leisure Park, a recent acquisition, is in the Ribble Valley.

Bay View, near Carnforth in Lancashire, has a much larger shore frontage than the Silverdale and Far Arnside parks and, although all are perfect centres for walking, Bay View takes the prize for level walking along the coast.

Ideal for exploring the North

Morecambe Bay estuary

This park is an ideal base from which to explore the Morecambe Bay estuary, the Lake District, North Yorkshire and the Forest of Bowland — that is, if you actually want to venture away from this charming park that retains its farm-origin character.

When Holgates bought this park it was two farms, called Bolton Holmes and Detrongate — and for a while, both of those names were used together; the unusual name made sure the park got noticed! The simpler name of Bay View, though, much better sums up the appeal here.

What’s on-site?

Bay View

One of the original farm buildings is now a restaurant-bar-café; namely Squirrels Bar and Restaurant. It’s full of character, with the rugged limestone of the region the dominant décor feature, and oak-beamed ceiling as well as a wood burning stove.

Squirrels Bar and Restaurant now has a new dog-friendly area, called the Bark Inn, with tables both inside and outside.

There’s a games room, shop and play area, too. And holiday home-owners are welcome to use the swimming pool and gym complex at Holgates’ Silverdale park (additional charges apply).

Bay View offers a programme of entertainment, from March to October, plus childrens’ discos. The park is open all year. Holiday homes start in price between £30,000 and £40,000.
