Holiday Home Review: Wessex Spinney

A completely new lodge – and, in a word, amazing; the Spinney is a refreshing take on country lodge living.

The exterior of this 45ft x 20ft home is clad in stunning Ced’R-Vue Sandalwood.

Enter through the door, coloured in Chartwell green, and you step into the galley kitchen with a split entrance to the lounge and the rest of the home.

By the door, there’s a convenient country-style hall bench and a mirror with coat hooks.

The kitchen features a glossy-tiled splash-back in the same green as the front door. The fixtures are finished in a light cream and the ceramic sink has a sloped draining area. It also has a wine cooler and ‘slide-and-hide’ oven door, maximising the available space by sliding beneath the oven.

I met up with Nathalie Montague, who designed the Spinney; we were at the World of Park and Leisure Homes Show at Stoneleigh where the Spinney was unveiled to the public, and caused quite a stir. She explained the ethos behind the Spinney: “Rustic, country yet practical; we tried to keep the home open with a unique and fresh feel.”

Lounge-dining area

The lounge has a feature wall with log burner-effect electric stove in the centre, lit from above. This is framed by wallpaper in a stacked log style, perfectly inkeeping with the Spinney’s country theme.

The dining area is adjacent to the lounge, and features quite the most stunning table we’ve yet seen in a lodge. It’s a huge reclaimed plank-effect table with matching benches in solid Acacia.

This awesome dining suite seems to encapsulate the Spinney’s country, natural style feel. Everywhere in this home, the attention to detail is inspirational and fantastic.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

Move down the corridor and the feature panelled wall of the master bedroom comes into view, with small recesses (with lighting and handy USB points) really making this room stand out; it also has designer lighting hanging above and beside the bed.

The bed is a rarity in a lodge, too, as it is a four-poster, delightfully following with the country theme. The en suite in the model reviewed here has a wet room area comprising both free-standing bath and shower areas, with a full width mirror opposite. Wessex offers an option here – you can go for a standard shower room model if that’s your preference. The main bathroom has a huge shower with a gloss-white and light brown tiles backing.

The second bedroom has twin beds, oak furniture and Roman blinds in a pretty hare design. This room, like the master bedroom, has wall recesses, also with inset lights and USB points.

Nathalie Montague told us: “I wanted to have a four-poster bed in the master bedroom from the start so when I found one that had a matching full length mirror with unique storage and a drawer unit with a hidden dressing table, I knew it would be perfect! The lights over the bed are handmade and I think add to the magic of the lodge.”

When we spent time in the Spinney at the Stoneleigh show we came away firmly of the opinion that this new lodge sets a new bar in inspirational design, with lots of unique features cleverly integrated to create an exquisite lodge that merges the best of country living with modern styling.
