EAST Beach will be an exclusive, brand new development of park homes designed to the highest of standards with complete new infrastructure being installed. Details are due to be released in the foreseeable future, and because of the idyllic, peaceful location by the sea, interest is sure to be high. Amenities and entertainment are close at hand in nearby Southend-on-Sea.

The popular seaside resort is within easy reach of London, and has an airport and local day-to-day amenities. The town is rich in local history dating back to the Stone Age, where evidence of all the different ages is displayed at the Prittlewell Priory Museum.

Visitors can enjoy seven miles of award-winning beaches, including the Jubilee Beach which is always above high tide; the longest pleasure pier in the world; over 80 parks and open spaces of varying size; plus six nature and 14 historic conservation areas.

At 1.34 miles, Southern Pier has had a chequered history, with a number of disasters, natural and man-made. A range of events take place throughout the year, such as visits by Tall Ships, and the Punch & Judy Festival. The Pier is used all-year round for angling, with passes available for both day and night fishing. Access to the Pier is via a train system, or by a walkway which extends almost to the end of the structure.

Southend also has several museums, including the Central Museum in Victoria Avenue. Based in the original library building of 1906, the museum houses displays on local archaeology, wildlife and human history. The ‘Victorian Life’ section has recently been re-displayed. There is also a Souvenir Shop on site.

By contrast, the Discovery Centre was opened in 2000, and is full of ‘hands-on’ activities for everyone to enjoy, from a database of local pictures and photographs, to a video microscope that makes everything look larger than life.

To the west of the town is Leigh, a haven for those with an artistic frame of mind, while Shoebury, at the other end of the town, has a long and varied history, including being home to the Shoebury Garrison. Shoebury’s position at the mouth of the Thames estuary has given it strategic importance since prehistoric times and as a result it has had a long association with military activity. Archaeological evidence suggests that ramparts in the present Garrison protected an Iron Age settlement. Originally, the ramparts were 40ft wide and 12ft high and possibly formed a semi-circle which was open to the sea. Parts of these ramparts survive, and with the area of the settlement, are now protected as a scheduled ancient monument within the Conservation Area.
