Park Profile: Club Holiday Homes

Imagine opening your holiday home curtains to gaze on mountain views guaranteed to take your breath away. All three of the Club Holiday Homes’ parks in the Lake District offer just that…

The spectacular scenery of the Lake District amply epitomises the holiday home dream. Fells, mountains, open vistas, forests, crags – and 16 lakes, this region has it all and more besides. It’s no surprise, then, that three of Club Holiday Homes’ parks are in the heart of this spectacular, wonderful region. One of the parks is close to Lake Windermere, the Lake District’s largest lake, and two are on the shores of Derwentwater, the Lake District’s third largest lake, further north. All three parks are enchanting holiday home locations, and each has its own character. One aspect these parks share, though, is that plot sizes are large – very large, as we discovered when we spent a day exploring the parks.

Just 10 minutes’ drive from Lake Windermere sits the Club Holiday Homes Windermere park. The lake, 10 miles long, runs roughly north-south; it’s the spine of the region known as the South Lakes, the most popular region of Cumbria. The park’s 22 acres are elevated and on differing levels, so there are views of the Kentmere fells from many of the holiday homes. Limestone outcrop, mature trees, dry stone walls and rockeries characterise the park. Some plots border fields; others have forest as a backcloth. Every plot is your very own little bit of the Lake District – at least, that’s the way it feels. The large plot sizes give rise to beautiful gardens around the holiday homes. The home owners have a hand in this, of course – and the park’s maintenance team keep all of the lawn and shrub areas immaculate. The result is a happy mix of created gardens and natural aspect.

There are 72 holiday homes and some lodges on the park, yet they melt into the scenery. Holiday home sales have been booming since parks reopened in July – and now there is just one plot left. It's in a forest-edge location with secluded aspects. Buyers here can look forward to silence except for birdsong, carpets of bluebells in spring and deer and pheasant to watch. This park has the distinction of being the only Club Holiday Homes park that has its own pub. Called the Whistling Pig, it’s a tiny, old character place serving locally-made ales, plus traditional pub food.

Windermere town, on the shore of the lake, is 10 minutes’ drive from the park. It's a buzzing, lively place, packed with eateries and lovely shops, with lake cruises galore available and lots of tourist attractions. It’s all there when you want it – and, when you don’t, you can retreat to your own Windermere holiday home enclave. Magic! Plot fees for 2020 are £4,385. The park has a 10-month season, from mid-March to mid-January.

Derwentwater Caravan Park and Lakeside Park
Two parks, each with their own lake beaches, Derwentwater and Lakeside are both on the shores of Derwentwater, almost adjacent. If you like waterborne pursuits and you’re also keen walkers, these
two parks are perfect choices. Lakeside has just 39 lodges, all wooden clad. Forest and space are keynotes here. Views are utterly fabulous, of Skiddaw, the third highest peak in the Lake District. Derwentwater Caravan Park spans 14 acres and has 153 holiday homes plus 17 lodges. Annual plot fees at both parks are from £4,000. The season is from March to January.

Both parks are around 10 minutes’ walk from Keswick. The town is the Lake District’s major walking centre; if you’re shopping for anything connected with walking, you will find it here. The term ’market town’ is rather over-used – but Keswick is a true market town. Every Saturday and on Thursdays from February to December, stalls stretch down the entire main street. Around 60 stalls sell a huge variety of goods – artisan bread, fish, meat, crafts, clothing, rugs, art and much more is set out under pretty red and white canopies.

Lake District charm doesn’t always come with sunny weather. Mountainous regions are, after all, known for changeable weather. But, even on the low-cloud day of our visit, the views were simply stunning. Proof that, whatever the weather, this region will always enthral you.
