Editor’s Pick: The top holiday park of October 2020 – Derwentwater Caravan Park, Cumbria

The Editor of Park & Holiday Home Inspiration magazine has chosen Club Holiday Homes' Derwentwater Caravan Park as the top holiday park of October 2020.

If there is a park that sells the dream of holiday home ownership it has to be Club Holiday Homes’ Derwentwater. It’s beside one of the Lake District’s most picturesque lakes, with its own lake beach and jetty, and awesome views of mountain ranges. And the park is just 10 minutes’ walk from the walking-centre market town of Keswick.

This park seems to sum up what holiday home ownership is all about – activities and relaxation in one fabulous location; that’s why it’s this month’s Editor’s Pick of holiday parks.

Activities? Well, walking, obviously. And all sorts of waterborne activity. Lots of the holiday home owners here have boats, canoes and kayaks; watercraft are stashed neatly under and alongside many of the lodges, we notice as we walk around the park.

We reach the jetty. A family of swans is mooching about in the shallows of Derwentwater. Across the lake, Nichol End Marine, with a café that’s famous for its freshly baked scones, we learn, beckons those who have watercraft. And, all around, the fells beckon the walker. Catbells, Maiden Moor, High Spy and more summits line up in the distance; countless walks sit here like a book waiting to be opened. From the jetty we have a view along Derwentwater, leading into what is known as the Jaws of Borrowdale, a dramatic valley created during the Ice Age.

Derwentwater Caravan Park is one of the three Camping and Caravanning Club Holiday Homes parks that we visited on a day packed with scenic splendour. (The others, Windermere and Lakeside, are detailed elsewhere in this issue.) Low cloud restricted the view, but it was nonetheless beautiful. The Lake District may not be known for incessant sunshine but it makes up for that by a guarantee of stupendous scenery; even in indifferent weather, this place has a magic charm. Little wonder demand for holiday homes in the Lake District is burgeoning – and Derwentwater is exactly what Park & Holiday Home Inspiration magazine is all about: inspiration.
