Full Review

The GT-S isn’t just a new model, it’s a brand-new range from Hymer, launched at the CMT Stuttgart show with two low-profile Mercedes Sprinter-based motorhomes sitting below the existing B-Class ModernComfort T.

Described as “the perfect entry into the premium class”, choose from the GT-S 600 at 7.09m long or the 30cm longer GT-S 685 seen here, which uses its extra space to include a face-to-face lounge and split ablutions across the aisle. Both layouts have rear single beds over a garage – by far the dominant layout amongst German brands.

Instantly recognisable as a Hymer, you might be surprised by the sub-£100k price tag, as well as the unusual Stone Grey finish for the bodywork (both cab and habitation), although that adds £1,830 to the cost. White is standard, with the cab also offered in Tenorite Grey metallic or black.

Mercedes base

This is a front-wheel drive Sprinter with the 150hp Euro VI-E motor – a 170hp upgrade is optional and, while the standard model is a 3,500kg vehicle to suit Class B car licences, a 3,880kg version is offered to increase the payload.

A wide range of Mercedes chassis options is also available, including alloy wheels, fog/cornering lights, a chrome grille, colour-coded bumper, heated windscreen, heated seats, sat-nav and High Beam Assist.

Standard spec includes an electric parking brake, semi-automatic Tempmatic climate control, keyless starting, the 10.25in MBUX display, stop/start, automatic lights and wipers and adaptive cruise control. Driver assistance features cover lane keeping, traffic signs, attention and crosswinds.

Popular format

Bodywork uses Hymer’s PUAL walls with aluminium inner and outer skins and closed cell PU foam insulation (41mm floor, 34mm walls and roof) and a GRP underbody. Surprisingly, a GRP roof coating is a £590 option, while you may also wish to consider other extras, such as the awning, towbar, Comfort habitation door, rear steadies and additional skylight for the bedroom.

Inside, there’s the popular combination of side-facing settees, a fixed central table and swivel cab seats below a large, opening overcab sunroof. There’s a flat floor throughout and over 2m of headroom, although this will be reduced in the lounge if you specify the electric drop-down double bed (£1,710).

It’s also possible (as an option) to convert the dinette into a bed, but however many berths you have, you’ll be able to control the (6kW diesel) heating and lighting via the Hymer Connect app. Bogota is the standard upholstery, with Valletta offering a mix of leather and fabric for £850.

Kitchen

Aft of the lounge, the galley is a compact unit on the nearside in Matara Olive, with a wood-finish worktop, white doors and Hymer’s characteristic leather straps to pull the soft-closing drawers open.

The sink has a loose cover, while opposite is the 136-litre compressor fridge. If you order the gas oven (£590), it goes above the fridge.

Washroom

In the 685 model, the toilet compartment and shower cubicle are completely separate, on opposing sides of the vehicle. Large mirrors enhance the feeling of space and water capacities are quite generous – 110 litres fresh, 100 litres waste.

The grey waste is emptied electrically, so there’s an end to getting down on hands and knees!

Long beds

In the bedroom, high-quality cold foam mattresses are combined with a knitted fabric pad for better ventilation. The beds are long – 2.02m and 2.05m, according to Hymer. Bedroom options include cupboards instead of overhead shelves, disc springs under the mattresses, ambient lighting and an additional infill cushion between the single berths.

As standard, the GT-S comes with the Hymer Smart Battery System 2.0, complete with a single 80Ah lithium battery. Adding a second such battery costs £1,530, while for the full off-grid spec a pair of 95W solar panels is £1,450. Upgrading the heating from diesel to diesel/230V costs £750.
