A new VW Transporter-based campervan with an electrically-extendable rear pod has just been launched
The new DoubleBack was launched this morning in Cardiff. MMM and Which Motorhome were there.
The new campervan is based on the VW T5 Transporter 2.0TDI 140PS Long Wheelbase and is fitted with an extending pod that contains a double bed. This rear pod technology creates almost two metres of additional usable space when on site.
But as the pod can be slid back into the camper, returning it to its normal length, the DoubleBack retains functionality of a load carrying day-to-day camper.
The creators say the new camper represents the "first true innovation in the market since the advent of the elevating roof over 30 years ago".
“The DoubleBack has been inspired by a desire to see a truly spacious, comfortable camper with all the practical advantages of a smaller vehicle” Craig McCormack, founder.
He adds that it is perfect for either leisure or sports and is suitable for young families and couples, carrying two or three passengers in either the captain's chairs or benchseat configurations.
They add that when extended, the DoubleBack offers space levels approaching that of a full motorhome. The vehicle is fitted with an elevating roof with fold-out bed, a kitchenette and all the usual refinements. There is however no washroom.
The DoubleBack is priced at £54,995 on the road.
It is sold through the VW Sinclair dealership in Cardiff.
