Brand-new range of British-built campervans and motorhomes launched
News
Ace is a new (or more accurately, perhaps, a revived) British brand.
It made its official debut at the Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show at the Birmingham NEC in February, with the first vehicles then being displayed at dealers around the country.
Already 20+ retailers have signed up to stock the new range, including two each in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Expect to see the Ace range at upcoming Warners Shows, too.
While the name may be remembered by those who were motorhoming two decades ago, this is effectively an all-new marque that’s aiming to attract first-time leisure vehicle owners, both couples and families, with a simple-to-understand range of keenly priced models.
There are Ace campervans based on the Fiat Ducato (the 1200 range) and low-profile coachbuilts, too, using the Ford Transit chassis (the 1500 range).
Prices start at just £59,805 for the panel vans and £64,995 for the motorhomes.
Turning to the campervans first, you can choose from three models.
The 1200 RL is the only six-metre campervan and, like the rest of the line-up, it has a half-dinette front lounge with full-height walk-through into the cab and Isofix on the forward-facing bench.
This layout also features a second lounge at the rear.
The 1200 GL is, perhaps, the most unusual of the campervans as it has an extra-large transverse double bed (1.88m by 1.65m max) in the rear, with storage for bikes below.
It is based on the extra-long (6.36m) Ducato, as is the 1200 SL with single beds in the stern.
All three campervans have a kitchen with a microwave as well as a two-burner hob and a compressor fridge. Washrooms have a tambour door, folding washbasin and a shower that doesn’t require a curtain.
Each of these models can be turned into a four-berth by adding the optional SCA pop-top for an extra £5,500 (they then have a ‘T’ suffix on the model name).
The only other options are the automatic gearbox (£2,995) and Driver’s Pack (£2,195).
The latter adds Lanzarote Grey paint, 16in alloy wheels, reversing sensors, Fiat sat-nav, a 110W solar panel (130W on pop-tops), electric step, cab blinds and a flyscreen for the sliding door.
There’s a little more choice in motorhomes but the two smaller (7m) models won’t arrive until June.
These are the 1500 ET (with drop-down bed over the front lounge, end washroom and garage) and the 1500 GL (with a transverse rear double bed over a garage). Both are pure two-berth vehicles without rear travel seats.
The longer (7.8m) 1500 SL (single beds) and 1500 DB (island bed) are the ones that are available from launch.
These are two-berth motorhomes as standard, with the option of adding foldaway Aguti rear travel seats under their side settees (for an additional £1,995).
The two-berth versions are expected to dominate sales as they boast additional under-seat storage with external access and a more open-plan lounge (with two small swivelling coffee tables – plus a free-standing table stored in the garage).
The four-berth derivatives have a fixed table that lowers electrically to form part of the front bed.
All the 1500 range motorhomes come with Ford’s 130hp motor and manual gearbox but can be upgraded to 165hp with the eight-speed automatic gearbox for £1,895.
Every one leaving the production line is also expected to have the Comfort Pack (£1,095) – Moondust Silver cab, 16in alloys, 12in media screen, reversing camera, cab blinds, habitation carpets, a duckboard and hanging rail in the shower, coat hooks, scatter cushions, bike rack mountings and a 120W solar panel.
Like the campervans, the motorhomes avoid any feeling of being back to basics, while contemporary colour schemes with granite-inspired soft furnishings keep things fresh.
With largely proven layouts and competitive pricing, we’d expect Ace to once again become a very familiar name amongst British motorhomers.
