A popular ‘wild-camping’ spot for motorhomers in the Algarve has been cleared by environmental protection officers, in a move labelled a “drastic”, by the local mayor.
The site, in the Portuguese town of Silves, had been home to hundreds of motorhomes, according to The Portugal News.A spokesperson for the GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana) environmental protection officers, told the newspaper the action was carried out after “various complaints were made by local residents”, some of whom said “the area was being used like a public bathroom.”
However, the mayor described the actions as “drastic” and said that the council had not been informed or consulted. He also said that “the presence of motorhomes in Silves represents a boost and
support to the dynamics of local trade, which should not be snubbed.”
