Looking at the Hymer B-MC I BlackLine range

Five Mercedes A-classes, all with special edition enhancements

Dark allure, pure elegance – immodest words, perhaps, but then this is a Hymer A-class we’re talking about and a special edition version at that. And those are the initial phrases on the subject from its maker, who goes on to describe the BlackLine as “our most elegant equipment package ever.”

Peter has reviewed everything from the smallest micro-camper to the biggest Liner-type A-classes you can drive on a C1 licence, and driven motorhomes all over the world.

B-Class ModernComfort range

Of course, the basis here is the B-Class ModernComfort range which uses the front-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with Hymer’s SLC chassis. There’s a low-profile ‘T’ version, too, but here we’re focusing on the ‘I’ or A-class range.

There’s more than a hint in the name but you’ll be able to spot a BlackLine from a standard B-MC model because of its black detailing on a Crystal-Silver metallic body. So, there are bold new graphics, in schwarz, as well as matt black Borbet alloy wheels (with all-season tyres) and a matching case for the roll-out awning. And it's not just about the colour and the kit, choosing a BlackLine gives you extra value for money compared with a standard vehicle equipped to the same level.

As a state-of-the-art motorhome, you can use the Hymer Connect system to control features such as the ambient lighting from your phone, but here the tech goes further to include, as standard, the Hymer Connect sensor package. So, you can monitor how much gas is left in your cylinders, receive alerts about interior temperature or humidity, and get warnings should you leave a door or window open.

Another bonus of the BlackLine is the 32in LED TV with built-in speakers, DVD player and Hymer’s Smart Multimedia System with Bluetooth.

Standard B-MC features

As with all B-Class ModernComfort models, the BlackLine range is designed for all-season use, thanks to its insulated and heated double floor which houses services such as the water tanks (as well as providing additional storage). Built on Hymer’s Super Light Chassis (SLC), the B-MC also boasts a level underbody to improve the vehicle’s aerodynamics and enhance stability. Crosswind Assist is another feature designed to make for more relaxing driving – it can automatically use the brakes to keep the vehicle in its lane in extremely windy conditions.

But the BlackLine isn’t a take-it-or-leave-it spec, it can still be personalised to your needs. The huge range of options includes Isofix, a water filter system, full LED headlights, twin solar panels, automatic vehicle levelling, an inverter and extra-long beds. Furniture is in Grand Oak finish but there’s a choice of upholsteries, including full leather.

For even greater luxury, choose from two packages. The Autonomy Package includes four 80Ah lithium batteries and an 1,800W inverter, while the Arctic Package encompasses warm water heating, a heat exchanger, garage floor heating, double-glazed cab side windows, an external windscreen cover and an insulating mat for the cab floor.

From 6.99m to 7.39m

Five models

There are five A-class BlackLine models, all with a 4,430kg maximum gross weight (giving a payload of up to 1.2 tonnes). The standard power unit is the 170hp Euro VI-E diesel with nine-speed automatic gearbox. All models have four berths as standard, thanks to the A-class drop-down bed in the cab, but this can be replaced with cupboards if preferred. A fifth travel seat is an option, except on the I 580.

The BlackLine model range:

* B-MC I 550 – 6.99m long, rear transverse double bed, L-shaped kitchen on the nearside, all-in-one washroom offside. Price £132,760

* B-MC I 580 – 6.99m long, rear single beds, straight kitchen on the offside, all-in-one washroom nearside. Price £132,760
