Figures from Warranty Solutions Group (WSG) show that fridge elements account for almost one in five habitation claims (19.3%), with the average repair costing £706.80. Fresh water pumps and skylight mechanisms were the next most common faults, with average repair bills of £232.74 and £377.03 respectively.
Other regularly reported issues include toilet flush mechanisms, water taps and cooker ignitors, while some of the biggest expenses come from awning motors, which can cost more than £2,300 to replace.
"Our data shows that habitation claims account for a huge proportion of repair costs. Too often, buyers are caught out by day-to-day components such as the fridge, water systems or toilet facilities."
WSG recommends thoroughly testing all appliances and water systems before buying, including fridges, taps, skylights, awnings and cooking equipment. The company also advises buyers to consider warranty cover to help protect against unexpected repair costs after purchase.
