Since Brexit, many GB residents have obtained EU-issued pet passports via vets abroad, allowing repeat travel without the need for additional paperwork, and avoiding the need for an animal health certificate.

However, under the updated rules, these passports may no longer be valid for entry into the EU, meaning travellers will need an AHC for each trip.

While AHCs remain single use for entry, they can now be used for up to six months for onward travel within the EU and re-entry into Great Britain, provided vaccinations remain valid.

The changes are expected to increase both the cost and admin involved in travelling with pets, with AHCs typically costing over £100 per trip.

An APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) spokesperson said holidays with pets are still possible but urged owners to check the latest guidance and entry requirements before travelling.

In addition to this, there is a new five-animal limit on private vehicles, meaning people travelling with non-commercial vehicles will need to limit themselves to five pets.
