Electric bikes: The ultimate guide
Review in brief
Gocycle has been dubbed ‘the iPhone of e-bikes’ and the G4 (prior to 2021 known as the GX) is its folding model.
- A wonderful lightweight motor that outperforms many heavier competitors
- Superbly innovative low-maintenance technology
- Quick fold
- Reasonably light
- Proprietary design means there may be compatibility problems with some traditionally designed accessories, eg bike trailers
About Gocycle
Gocycle was launched in 2009, by a former McLaren Cars design engineer, using proprietary technology that makes its ebikes like no other.
About the Gocycle G4 electric bike
Three hub gears and the quickly accelerating motor make the Gocycle G4 great fun to ride:
• Lighter
It’s a pretty lightweight machine that folds quickly and compactly. The updated G4 version weighs 16.9kg - 600g lighter than the previous GX model.
• Like no other
It has a fully suspended funkily Y-shaped frame that houses the 300Wh battery, a front hub motor that zips up hills, handlebar integrated LED lighting (the ‘fuel gauge’), fully enclosed chain and gears and magnesium one-piece wheels on single-sided forks.
• Power on demand
It feels efficient and fast to ride because it is and its secret weapon is the ‘On Demand’ mode, activated by a small push-button by the left handgrip, delivering maximum power for the duration it’s held in.
• Smart bike for smart phone
To make the most of the Gocycle’s cleverness it’s best to handlebar-mount a smartphone and keep the Gocycle app open so you can swap between several power settings from battery-saving Eco mode to the exhilarating City+ mode. The app also lets you play around with the power profiles and customise them as well as giving access to masses of other data.
• Accessories and more
Gocycle’s other 2021 models are the G4i (premium spec folder) and the G3+ (demountable rather than foldable).
Optional accessories for all Gocycle models include front and rear pannier systems which add a very good amount of carrying capacity, integrated LED lighting and mudguards.
