Pilote Atlas A690GJ

Pilote’s Atlas range is the company’s most up to date in design and its bold, angular exterior with geometric graphics is mated to a metallic grey Trail-spec Ford Transit cab with black alloy wheels (as a £990 option). It comes as standard with the 165hp engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as a wide rear track, so it will drive as well as it looks.

Front fog lamps, automatic lights and wipers, an electric parking brake and adaptive cruise control are all included, too. In the cab, you benefit from the Transit’s excellent driving position and the 12in infotainment screen with reversing camera.

Crucially for added driver appeal and ease of getting off the beaten track, this is not a large motorhome. Length is a smidgen under 7m, while an overall width of 2.20m makes it more compact than other Pilotes. Less bulk also means that it’s a motorhome which can be driven on a car licence, with the 3.5-tonne chassis allowing a sensible payload of 575kg.

You can really use the large garage, too – bikes will fit easily, thanks to 1.20m headroom. A storage drawer built into the nearside skirt is a useful addition for smaller gear. It’s not just in terms of its slimline bodywork that the A690GJ is on trend but also with its interior décor and design.

While some rivals persist with a half-dinette lounge, the Atlas has a more open-plan face-to-face seating area with a fold-in-half table.

It’s a comfortable place to relax, with the possibility of converting sofas into travel seats when required. You can also specify a drop-down double bed above, although the Pilote probably works best as a motorhome for couples.

In the kitchen, we like the stylish blue/grey locker doors but, more importantly, the optional oven/grill that’s mounted under the hob for easy access.

You won’t be short of fridge capacity as there’s a 142-litre automatic energy selection cooler adjacent. Opposite, the washroom makes good use of space with its swing-wall design for the shower, which also has twin drains.

Washroom storage is excellent and the loo is the better-quality Dometic cassette unit. Water capacities are a practical size, at 100 litres fresh (inboard) and 90 litres waste.

There’s more good news in the bedroom, where the French designers have avoided the usual head-bashing overhead cupboards over the single beds. Instead there are much slimmer shelves (with elasticated straps to keep their contents in place), leaving just enough room to sit up with a cuppa in the morning.

As shown, with 6kW diesel/230V heating, awning, solar panel, an insulated waste tank, all-season tyres and more, the Atlas was still under £79k and looked a great package for all-year-round adventures.

Bürstner B66 690 TD

Just as with the B66 campervans, the motorhomes in this new range from Bürstner come with an impressive range of standard equipment, as well as a keen price tag, making them look exceptional value for money.

This model is priced from £76,295. The 690 TD is best seen as a comfortable two-berth, in which case it’s based on a licence-friendly 3,500kg Fiat Ducato (an optional drop-down bed makes it into a four-berth but requires a 3,650kg maximum gross weight).

There aren’t really any other options to consider, although the faux leather upholstery is offered in three different colours. Even the automatic gearbox and awning are included in the price.

Malibu I 441 KB-LE Lightweight

The motorhome range from Malibu (Carthago’s sub-brand) has a new look this season but it’s the use of space here that makes the I 441 KB-LE such a strong contender. Whilst only 6.57m long, it feels much bigger inside.

Partly that’s down to the full-width A-class cab but also because you can delete the drop-down cab bed for a much more spacious lounge.

For £114,935 (as shown with a good range of options), this Malibu makes you wonder why you’d go bigger. It still has a deep double floor and a large garage, like much pricier Carthagos, and here it’s possible to stay on a 3,500kg chassis. Long beds and a low-set oven in the galley complete an appealing package.
